Butrans patches

I have just been put on Butrans patch 5mcg as I cannot tolerate any oral pain medication - I was admitted with severe pain and tried on codeine and morphine - I was very sick and generally extremely ill. The consultant then put me on Butrans for long term pain relief. I would appreciate any feedback for other users regarding these patches

they have to be prescribed by a consultant (if you are in the UK) and they are used for people like me who have chronic pain and cant take oral pain killers - I cant take co codamol, codeine, morphine, tramadol etc orally as I get various symptoms such as vomiting, bleeding from the stomach, and become very ill generally within hours of taking these. so far the patches are working for me.

I have been using Butrans patches for about 2 years now. I started off with 5mg, moved to 10mg before settling on 15mg which I have remained now for over 18months. I find it a very good form of pain relief and while it doesn’t take away the pain completely, it has stabilised it and stops all the 'ups and downs' I was getting with purely oral meds. The only thing I have found and it’s a very common problem I think, is that the adhesive can cause quite severe skin itching and irritation but I find that if you use a different site each week and before applying, give the skin a really good clean (I use Zoff patches from the pharmacy), let it dry then stick the patch in then it lessens any irritation.

Best of luck with them and hope they give you some relief Xx

Thank you for responding. I am on the 5mg at present and find this is OK and I have had very little side effects - a bit of nausea and dizziness (but my balance is bad anyway) so far no skin problems but I will bear your tip in mind.

Be careful.

It is prescribed in the US primarily as a way to get off of opioid addiction.

Here are some articles concerning:
