I can't tell if this is depression or just the way I am.

I used to enjoy doing many things and I felt like I had a purpose in life. Now I feel like I have no purpose and spend all my time wishing I could just go to sleep. I don't feel like doing anything. I just don't want to exist anymore. I can't tell if this is from my depression or if it's just the way I am. I feel like I'm just extremely lazy, but I do want to be like I was before.

You could be subconsciously depressed. Try find the root of your depression and figure out a way to deal with it. This is another strange one to explain but its most likely something about your lifestyle that's bringing up this feeling. For example, sleeping late, worrying too much about your job or some piece of coursework you have to give in before the deadline, loneliness etc. If you have some sort of guilt or sadness towards something then figure a way to make yourself feel better. Not much people talk about this because they don't understand it but to get yourself back to 'normal', all you really have to do is become more active (so continuing the activities that you love) and get the right amount of sleep (not too little and not too much). Sleep is very important too since if you have too little or too much sleep, it can cause depression. You'll be fine after a couple of days. So, you know, its not you :P

Boy oh boy can I relate to this post. I've asked myself is this depression or laziness loads of times. Since I derive very little enjoyment out of anything these days, for me at least depression seems to be the answer. 😦 There are times I quite simply can't stand being around myself, much less other folks. I dunno ....

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm being treated for depression, and I am better than I was before I sought treatment. I just don't feel 100%. It's like there is a constant back and forth because I don't want to do anything, yet I don't want to be like this so I want to do something. It's an exhausting cycle.

Yep, me too. I still have depression but some days are worse than others. The other thing I get is an awful sense of fear. I don't know what I'm scared of but this awful sense of fear is immobilizing when it hits.

I don't think that sounds like laziness, especially since you have felt pretty well at times in the past. A symptom of depression is lethargy. Has something happened recently in your life to bring you down like this? It could be situational if that was true. Keep in touch with the good 😊 people on this forum. Rest when you need to. Thanks for your reply. I've been depressed for a few years now and I guess I'm feeling like it has to be just the way I am because it's gone on for so long. As for something happening, I had a very close uncle pass away in June. I guess I haven't really dealt with it because it just doesn't seem real. I don't know if that could be contributing to it. I think it could also have a lot to do with my job and the way that my life is currently. There are just so many things that I want to change, but it's hard to get a hold on everything when I feel this way.

That sounds tough. It's so hard to deal with the loss of a loved one. My mom died 2years ago and I thought I would die. I've also had depression for many years, bipolar. Maybe an anti-depressant would help, at least for awhile? Some of us are chemically missing serotonin, etc. that results in depression. Life changes cause increased depression after any major life changes: relationship, changing jobs, where you live. The more things that change, the worse your depression might get. It is very hard to change things in your life. Sometimes you feel trapped in your life. I know how that feels. Many of the people on this forum know this feeling. Nesie 237

I've been on antidepressants for quite a while and have switched several times. It just seems like we can't find one that really works. I did also recently switch to working full-time, and I think that has a lot to do with it. I don't enjoy my job and want to find something else soon. Getting up in the morning knowing that I have to go to a job that I hate wears me down.

I hear that. So hard to do a job you dread going to. I hope you are able to find something that you can enjoy 😊 or at least tolerate better. Finding the right med or combo is hard, I think your doctor and you can find it if you keep trying. Hugs 🤗 to you, Nessie 237
