I don't know what to do

I'm new to this kinda stuff and I dunno if anyone will read this. I don't know what to do anymore, I was diagnosed with depression when I was 15, I'm 18 almost 19 and it seems like it will never stop. I've took fluoxetine and it did nothing. One week I will want to commit suicide and the next week I will be over joyed with my life, hanging out with friends, going out and enjoying myself. It's like I'm constantly up and down and I don't know how to stay balanced.

Hi Marinaruiz, I struggled for years on the wrong medication, fluoxetine being one of them. It wasn't until I addressed my real issues, which was that I had been abused by a family member, and started having counselling, who then got me the correct meds did I start to improve. Go back to your doctor and insist your meds are not helping. You're very young and shouldn't be suffering. But you've come to the right place, where you'll be understood and supported. Let me know how you get on, or at least keep talking on this site, there's always some to help and listen. God bless.

Hi marina welcome to the group im glad youve taken the first step in getting better i dont know were you are but when you have suicidal thoughts try phoning the samaritans they are really good at listening to you and talk you through it ! Have you got a support network ie family and friends that can make a difference ! Have you been to your doctor lately it might be worth telling how your feeling it might just need a adjustment. To the dosage or change your medication. !i wish you all. The best take care david

Hello Marinaruiz. There are many kinds of depression and if your mood is really changing quickly from week to week you may have cyclothermia. I've never had this but always considered that it is probably easier to bear as at least you don't have to suffer a non stop 3-18 month spell of continuous black depression.

However I don't think it is any less serious than other types, especially if you think there is any real possibility of suicide. I would contact your GP and make sure that he is aware of this rapid cycling as there may be other drugs and treatments targetted for cyclothermia, possibly a mood stabiliser.

Finding the right drug for each sufferer is often difficult especially as most can take up to 12 weeks or even longer to work,or to become fully effective so be patient. At 18 everything seems to take a lifetime ,but at 19 almost you're young and probably pretty resilient and there is every hope that the medics will find what works for you.

I would say that when overjoyed, being young it is easy to start burning the candle at both ends, and regular and healthy eating and sleeping habits should generally help with most forms of depression. At least if you have a late night try and get a better night's sleep the next night.

Yes it could be cyclothermia which is a very mild form of bipolar or it could just be that once the depression has liftted you feel a bit like you're "high"; difficult to say without knowing you but yes do go back to GP and tell them especially about the very low mood you have as getting the right diagnosis and medication can stabilise you.

I think you should go back to your doctor and tell them about the ups and downs. You are suffering from what sounds like early onset Bipolar disorder. I'm not a medical professional but if your struggling to find a balance, it may not be something you want to hear but it may just be hormones.
