Yes you probably will feel worse before you are better, they take at least 3 weeks

To begin have a beneficial effect, but you know antidepressants are great but are no magic bullet and there are lots of things which you can start doing now to feel better.

Things like a good diet, excercise every day and doing some things you love every day and trying to stay socially connected.

I say all this because I use these strategies myself, I feel my antidepressants are 50% and the rest is hard work on my part, making sure I do everything to help myself.

You haven't given a  lot of detail, so I will leave it here, hope you feel better soon, but start doing little things to help yourself right now.

Thanks Hannah

Hi didn't your doctor warn you that you can feel worse before you start to feel better and it will take a few weeks for them to get fully into your system?   x

in reply to

He did but for about a week, been on them 3 weeks now

Hi maybe the dose is too low then.  I started on 100 mgs which didn't help but putting them up to 150 mgs was great.  Am still on them.  x

in reply to

Feel real sick after taking them

in reply to

Well maybe they don't suit you?  I tried 2 others before I went on sertraline.  I would go back to your doctors and get them changed x

Think I will

Anti -depressants are trial and error. Some can make you feel worse and some better. Fortunately there are many types that work on different chemicals in the brain. What works for one person may not work for another.

This Dr gives good advise on them. She doesn't buy (neither do I) that you might feel worse before you feel better- provided you start on the lowest dose possible sharischreiber.com/antidepr...

I have been on several Anti -D's and all of the different groups. When I felt worse on them,  it never got better. From day 1 taking Imipramine I felt slightly better and that is the pill I have been on since 1988

CBT is great, it helped me tremendously. I think if I had got into psychoanalysis it would have made me worse. I would have analysed everything and thought everything was relevant. CBT is very effective for phobias and eating disorders too

Got my first cbt tomorrow

Was on venaflexine now on sertarline

Hi. 3 weeks is the bare minimum amount of time it takes for an antidepressant to work. Some others like Prozac take even 5 to 8 weeks to work. So don't feel too discouraged.

Like Hannah said, taking medication is only the half of it; you have to put in some work to make yourself feel better.

CBT can also be just as helpful, if not more than antidepressants alone
