Depression or underlying health issue?

I had an onset of severe depression 3 months ago. I've noticed drinking plenty of water helps and even sometimes stops the depression dead in its tracks. The usual 8 glasses a day doesn't seem enough. I need more like 12-16. It doesn't seem consistent though.

I'm wondering if it could be a health issue. It doesn't seem right for someone to be bloated on water to feel normal. I thought maybe it was my blood sugar, last test was 6.0(3.5-6.0) but sugary foods doesn't seem to effect it.

Dear Wesley

Please be careful with your water intake I would suggest that you see your doctor regarding this as it doesn't sound right. Read below the dangers of drinking too much water.

Staying safely hydrated

Generally, if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colorless or light yellow — and measures about 6.3 cups (1.5 liters) or more a day if you were to keep track — your fluid intake is probably adequate. If you're concerned about your fluid intake or have health issues, check with your doctor or a registered dietitian. He or she can help you determine the amount of water that's right for you.

To ward off dehydration and make sure your body has the fluids it needs, make water your beverage of choice. It's also a good idea to:

Drink a glass of water or other calorie-free or low-calorie beverage with each meal and between each meal

Drink water before, during and after exercise

Although uncommon, it is possible to drink too much water. When your kidneys are unable to excrete the excess water, the electrolyte (mineral) content of the blood is diluted, resulting in low sodium levels in the blood, a condition called hyponatremia. Endurance athletes, such as marathon runners who drink large amounts of water, are at higher risk of hyponatremia.

I would advise that you see your GP it may be diabetes

Explain your feelings of being low there may be options there that may help you

Hi Wesley, What are you eating? if you have a high salt consumption, I.e. Savoury snacks or add a lot to your meals, , it will dehydrate you also. Try looking up dehydration, and see if any thing you find there rings any bells with you or other health conditions. I dont know what the norms are for diabetes tests. Is that the 1st test, if not, compare it to tests you have before. My husband had type 2 diabetes and it didn't make him thirsty at all. He likes his coffee, and tea in the morning and mid afternoon, but didn't drink either of those obsessively!

If you are on other meds, go to drugs.com and enter the names of any meds you are on, to get info about what the med is and its side effects. You can also enter multiple drugs and would get a warning about which ones counteract each other.

It is also important to take meds exactly how and when the the manufacturers leaflets say! Some meds are best taken are completely different times of day.

Salt and Alcohol are both dehydrators!

I'm not a medic, just learnt a lot from research into my own complicated health.
