Elaine - really sorry to hear that you are suffering.

Have you ever had your B12 levels checked - B12 is used by the body for a lot of key processes so the symptoms are very wide ranging and can develop over years/decades.

it generally happens because something goes wrong with the rather specialised mechanism that humans use to extract it from our food - so the cumulative effects of not being able to absorb it - and also not being able to recyle it effectively are one reason.

You can find a list of the symptoms here - which include balance problems, tinitus, migraine, depression, anxiety and a load of other things

pernicious-anaemia-society....

Unfortunately it is a condition that most GPs are quite unaware of - at least in terms of the range of symptoms beyond anaemia - which isn't always present. It isn't something that is routinely tested for. It isn't as uncommon as they generally tend to believe and to make things worse the test that is normally done isn't as specific as they thing and people can be told that their results are normal when they have strong clinical signs and nothing is done - though the recommendation is to treat on the basis of symptoms not test results. If your results are under 450 you can still be deficient but most GPs aren't aware of that.

How people respond to B12 and process it to the one active form that the body can use varies a lot.

B12 and folate are used together so you should be tested for folate at the same time - if that is low then you can get a similar range of symptoms.

its also true that the symptoms overlap with a load of other conditions and having one does not unfortunately rule out others.

If you think it is a possibility then it can be very difficult to get through to your GP - there is a PAS forum on health unlocked and you might find joining that useful.
