Medication side effect?

Ever since I started my new medication, 50mg of Sertraline, I've had this really, really itchy rash. The doctors haven't done anything incase it's a side effect and said to wait it out. I've had it for nearly a month now and it's getting worse. Has anyone else had this on Sertraline?

Hi there I had had rashes on Different types of Meds not just antibiotics, I found

That after a month or so they. Disappeared or at least got better.

I do have dry sensitive skin and have to put lots of creams on. Is itchy skin

A side effect of this drug? That is important to know. It could be

Something else.

If it doesn't improve I would go back to Dr. And ask for different Meds

Or ask him to refer you for skin tests.

Is it just on your hands? Or all over. I feel it's medical so back to GP is the

Best bet.

Hannah

Hi I take 150mg of sertraline a day and have not really had any problems though I do get the odd little rash on my feet. Unless it is severe it is probably worth putting up with. x

Many anti-histamines interact with anti-depressants but your doctor should be able to give you some sort of cream. E45 or aqueous cream may help. I suffer with itchy skin that flares up occasionally. The leaflet that came with my anti-depressant (citalopram) says it should not be prescribed to those with psoriasis.

It looks like eczema. I have this all the time on my hands and it looks just like mine. Try to resist scratching which I know is almost impossible at times. Buy yourself some E45 or Oilatum (both available over the counter).

I was prescribed E45 when younger until I found out I was allergic to the ingredient lanolin. Ever since then I've been using Oilatum which can actually reduce the itching.

Hope it is just a side effect and will disappear soon xx

Hello Rae

One of the contraindications of Sertraline is a form of internal bleeding, this would explain the light blue/yellow bleeding on the hand. Are you taking this medication in higher doses or are you taking a higher dose than what is advised.

One other problem here is if you are taking other medications as another group of medications in the treatment of RA or OA may cause the problem.

Generally the above bleeding can be in the small vien in the hands and sometimes arms or legs. I may be wrong although when looking at your nails they seemed to show blue in the nail quicks, it may be just the way the photographs relate to your hands. i checked the medication and it has this problem.

Initially i would suggest that you look up this medication on the internet. There is a good site that deals with medications in the UK market. You are spoilt for choice so take a look confirm this problem yourself then call your GP.

I am no GP so you have to take advice from your GP. Confirm this information

Hello Rose

Thank you, I did check the drug on a drug list and it can cause a problem. That is why I recommended a little bit of research to confirm my findings. As we are always advised to point to further sources of information

Thanks

Bob you have got me worried now as I take a high dose of sertraline at 150mgs a day. I don't want to be internally bleeding! Should I see my doctor and maybe change meds do you think. Bev x

Hello Bev

Sorry I have not got back to you I am on holiday at the moment and I have just developed gout in my LHS big toe LOL

I checked the information on the address below. Also after Rose got back to me saying it was varnish I confirmed the information on You Tube and the drugs .com pages.

If you are concerned I would possibly advise you to look on these sites, I understand if it is like the Arthritis medication it may be the small veins

Although they also mention bleeding.

Have not checked any other sites although you could try NHS CHOICES to confirm the information further

Believe me I do not intend upsetting people. MY arthritis medications can do the same thing and I suffered bleeding three weeks ago and am going into hospital for tests next week, although this is for a different type of drug

Please confirm for yourself here and if you want you can confirm on the list of contraindication it is way down the list

BOB xx

For further information

Go to drugs.com

Or you can go on you tube with the same title,

Good Luck

Go back GP yes we all have side affects sometimes it can be something within the medication (made-up) that you have a reaction against---- could be down to nerves

or a other allergy (changed your washing up liquid) something simple--make a list and stop using products if then you cannot find out what it is then go back GP or just change your chemist for a different brand.

Try some hydrocortizone cream (as for mosquito bites) or anti-histamine cream as it will help.

I haven't taken setraline but have had the same problem as you; it looks like dry skin to me. What has helped mine is something called Dermol which you use instead of soap. Always best to check with doctor though with things like this. Mine lasted for months until I used the dermol cream everyday and stopped using bubble bath and shower gel; I'm still clean though folks, so don't worry the dermol acts like soap!! Gemma :)
