Non Existent Sex Drive...

Ok, so I'm 19 years old, I'm a student at University and have been suffering with depression for a couple of years on and off.

I never gone to get diagnosed thinking I'd be fine (everyone has their up and down days), but recently, it's got to the point where I'm failing University. I have no motivation to do anything anymore, not even play the games I love, read, write or even dance (these are my favourite hobbies).

I have now been to the doctors and have started on anti-depressants.

I sleep all the time, and have lost my sex drive. I'm in a committed long distance (while at University), and there are no problems with our relationship to make my sex drive go down. It's practically non existent. I know sex isn't the main thing that supports our relationship as we love each other a lot, but because of the distance it was a way for us to feel closer together and have fun and excitement in our life. It's affecting me emotionally more then it's affecting our relationship.

I get very upset because of it. I've always been known as having a high sex drive (just to clarify, I don't go around sleeping with people, I have my boyfriend and I see sex as a valued thing, something that shouldn't be given away freely) and I've always prided myself on who I was.

I feel lost as to what to do with this. Does anyone else have a similar problem? Or any ideas on what we could try? We're very open.

x

A lot of anti depressants have that effect but I've read of a couple that don't. It might be worth you going back to your GP and raising this issue and seeing if there are any other ADs that affect you less/not at all whilst still raising your mood.

Good luck,

Lorraine

Hi

Thats the one thing I've had no problems with, I'm thinking could it be to do with being hard on ourselves.

i.e. I'm worthless so I wont enjoy sex

or I'm not worth loving,

Like maybe, when we were children, we wouldn't get praise for stuff, or being told that sex is evil. Just a couple of thoughts on this subject.

I'm hard on myself, in many ways, but sex has always been an ok thing to do, with a loving partner. I do draw the line at self gratification, or loose sex to.

Wish you well

B

Hi there,

When we are Depressed everything suffers, and lack of a sex drive would be one of the symptoms of Depression, University can be very stressful and if you are Depressed and worrying about failing, it doesnt exactly make you feel all lovey dovey with your partner, Women worries can afffect their sex drive, give yourself a chance on the Medication, it takes at least a Month to feel a bit better, now I am not sure how long you are on the Meds, but they take a while, if after a month or two on them, you are still feeling the same, I would talk to your Doctor about this, as it could be just another symptom of the Depression that will come right in time.

Please try and relax, if you have a loving partner, just concentrate on having fun with each other, and doing nice things together, then things will naturally happen. If you need more advice, dont hesitate to talk to your doctor too, as nowadays Doctors are much more open, and you are right to want to get things sorted out.

Good luck and try not to get too stressed about it as this itself will become a problem. Relax and talk to your doctor.

love and a hug

Hannah
