Will a hearing aid help tinnitus caused by high frequency hearing loss?

Hi all,

I've been referred to try a hearing aid but warned it probably won't help as I've only lost high frequency hearing. Is anyone in the same situation, I'd love it to reduce the tinnitus!

Hello Swimmer. I've had no hearing in my left ear since my AN surgery in 1987. My right ear is good. So hospital ENT fitted me with a cross hearing aid which picks up sound from the left and puts it in my right ear. That means if somebody speaks to me from the left I can hear them or if there is a car approaching from that side I can avoid stepping off the kerb in front of it! That aid had a cable running across my collar from one side to the other. |So after about 25 years that one packed up. So I left it for about 5 years and this year I went to Specsavers and got an electronic version. No cable. It works well but the batteries only last a week or so so I don't wear it all the time. I wear it driving the car so I can hear my wife giving me instructions from the passenger seat. Unfortunately the cost is a bit excessive so be prepared for a shock if you research one. Hope all this helps. Keith

Hi , I have tinnitus in both ears and my hearing aids really help as they drown it out . Go down the NHS route for them so if they don't work for you you haven't spent a fortune .

Hi I still have some hearing on the left and my hearing on the right is good . The doctors have told me that wearing my NHS hearing aid will help with tinnitus but I cannot really say if it does because I don't get tinnitus all the time it comes and goes . I don't wear my hearing aid very much, I haven't really taken too it , I can hide it under my hair so that isn't the reason but we have the TV quite loud because my Husbands hearing isn't that good.

Good luck I hope your hearing aids help

I have this problem with my husband too . He is deaf in one ear and had the type of hearing aids that take the sound on one side and transfers it to his hearing side . All was good until someone commented on his wearing hearing aids since when he has refused to wear them . He has the tv so loud that it hurts my hearing , sometimes I have to take mine out . I have to wear two hearing aids due to hearing loss and tinnitus caused by Meniers . Now with my AN it is causing sensitivity to sound on a regular basis . Would your husband consider having his hearing tested ? As to getting used to wearing them I found it best to wear them all the time and then you get adjusted to them quicker . Give them a real good try , I would be totally lost without mine now . Best of luck .

Swimmer3:

My AN killed off the hearing in my left ear and caused loud tinnitus for the past 18 years. My right ear has lost much of the high frequency so I got a hearing aid for my right good ear. After years of experimentation by upping the higher frequencies I have found that it doesn't help my hearing, it just makes it sound more screechy. I thus had it set for the frequency range I had before the AN, i.e., just amplifying all of the frequencies; it makes it sound more natural. Bottom line, the hearing aid helped overpower the tinnitus when worn, helping me to hear better over the loud tinnitus. Of course, when not using the hearing aid I still get loud tinnitus, which I ignore.
