Warafin Users

My husband had DVT in leg. He has stopped taking the warafin for the past few months and has a doc appointment next week. He has not gone for a INR in about a month. Has anyone just took themselves off of this medication?

Gosh he took himself off Warfarin without his Doctor being aware is that right, if so I would be very concerned, INR is tested when a person in on warfarin anyone not on it would have an INR of 1.0

My husband Tim's last INR was in the twos. I had told him not to go off unless doc approves of it.

Forgot to add I am now on Pradaxa 110mg twice a day

I came off warfarin 2 weeks ago after telling my doctor I felt it interacted with my other medication . Although I was on it for 2 years I was never happy with it. I have had no side effects so far and feel much happier, also there is no need to keep going back for I N R results

I would strongly advise him to discuss this with his GP ASAP like tomorrow ! There is a reason why people are prescribed wafarin. He might not be so lucky next time blood clots in the calf can travel up to the lungs.

Thank you for your response. He has an appointment next week and he seems to be fine. He had his bladder removed in April 2015 and the DVT two months later in May. I hope nothing happens.

As daisyd suggested, I would go and see the GP ASAP. It is not a medication to tamper with as you like.

He may seem fine, but warfarin thins the blood and that is all it does. As he had a DVT it protects him from getting another. I would get him to see his GP asap. A friend had a DVT on a flight home and was on warfarin for quite a few months, but he did come off it finally, when the drs felt there was no risk of another DVT

As most others have suggested I would def seek medical advice before stopping this medication. My blood clot was ( is still) on my brain and believe me you don't want it there for sure ! ( nowhere really) ... Iknow I have been on it for some time now ( nearly two years) and have discussed other anti coagulants but the oldfashioned one suits me best.

Thank you all for your support. My husband has doc appointment next week. His leg has not swelled up in long time. He was first diagnosed with DVT in May 2015 and was takin the warafin. He also was told he has diabetes 2. It's border line now. He had a major surgery in April 2015 removal of bladder. He rides his bike every day and does 6 to 10 miles. Let's see what doc has to say.

Hi Chrissy,

I'm sure your husband does know the signs I.e swelling, heat and redness that comes with having a clot and that he knows his own body. I knew immediately! ( I even bet my nurse a ridiculous amount of money that I was right, she never coughed up but nvm lol)

I came of the Warfarin after a 7 month course (usually it's a 6 months stretch and another Doppler scan to check the blood flow is good) This was to remove the 1st very large DVT in my Femoral Vein. Within 31 days of stopping the treatment my body had produced 4 more! I am now half way through my 2nd treatment, if he gets a 2nd clot it won't just be treatment as they automatically keep you on Anticoagulants for life, they have to so it cannot happen again. I presume your husband's DVT was triggered by his surgery. Problem is, once you have had one DVT, there is a substantially increased risk you could have another. That's why you are prescribed an anticoagulant to protect you against having another clot. Warfarin doesn't "cure" you of this increased risk, it just stops your blood from clotting too quickly and causing a clot, but only as long as you take it. The INR test is done to make sure the Warfarin is working, but again, your INR will quickly drop back to a dangerous level as soon as you stop taking the drug which means you are not protected any more. A blood clot can move through your veins and lodge in your lungs, heart or brain, potentially causing very serious conditions such as a stroke. There are no outward signs, such as swelling, that you are at risk of a clot. Hopefully, since your husband's DVT was some time ago, and assuming he hasn't been diagnosed with any underlying condition that makes him more prone to clots, your doctor may say he can stop taking the anticoagulant. But because the consequences can be so serious, no-one should ever just stop taking an anticoagulant without medical advice.

Well that was a pretty foolish thing to do ! Warfarin is a life saver so what possessed him to do such stupid thing and stop taking warfarin without consulting his GP ????🤔🤔🤔

I had a dvt with NO symptoms until I passed out and nearly died on the way to the hospital because the clot had broken off and travelled to my lungs. On warfarin 6 months then taken off.

Shortly after it happened again, NO WARNING SIGNS and again almost died on way to hospital. Now I take it every day forever and check it frequently at home with my monitor Medicare paid for. I would quit all my meds before I quit taking Warfarin! It's keeping me alive. Take this advice SERIOUSLY! This is a serious issue!
