Hi everyone

I developed tinnitus ( a high pitched metalic scream) in March of this year i believe it was to do with operating heavy machinery without ear defenders for long periods of time. I saw doctors and specialists and was told there was nothing they could do and i had to get used to it, this was not the news i wanted to hear....... I was told on this forum about habituation and that it took 6-18 months and the thought of 6 months of noise drove me mad. I did have a month of anti depressants that helped me sleep to get me through the worst of it but sure enough after 4 months or so i started to have spells where i could not hear it anymore. Try to keep busy, do not stay in silent places and as hard as it might sound try to forget the noise.

Well i am now 9 months in and i have to say i have days where i don't hear it at all and generally hear it very little. (As i'm writing this suddenly it comes back haha)

I'm not saying this is the same for everyone but if you're new to this don't give up.

Hope this helps x

Hello darren25 - good to see you again, and thank you for coming back to share your experience.

I'm so pleased that your tinnitus is much improved, and that you have largely habituated to the noise. It's posts like these that make me want to say "told you so" but with a big grin on my face!

Warmest wishes

Nic (BTA Communications Manager and Forum Administrator)

That’s excellent news. When we’re suffering we never believe that things will improve, but they do and you (and I) are proof of this.

Take care

Hi Darren, so good to hear you are getting used to the dreaded ringing! It’s a shock to the system eh! ... I didn’t really know what Tinnitus was up until 3 years ago when I first got it. I’ve had a lot of intervention over the years, and now have a Cochlear Implant. I was told also I would habituate, but instead of listening to that, I tried everything possible to cure it! I now know there is no remarkable cure. I live in Australia and someone told me they saw a show where there was research done on stem cell as a treatment , so we live in hope. Your email was so positive ... that’s what we all need,,

Take care and keep up the positivity 😊😊😊😊😊

I've been advised in the past not to 'watch the clock', waiting for habituation to develop, as doing so can mean that you're subconsciously focussing attention on your T and thereby keeping it going. Darren seems to have a very brief flirtation w/ Mr T and I'm extremely pleased for him that he didn't have to endure it for any longer than he did, but try not to focus on his timescale - or you own for that matter. You just have to ignore the T and trust that it should fade / reduce in time.

Just to sound a note of caution, I have habituated in the past for nearly two years, but if something bad happens it can all too easily come back. I haven’t posted for quite a while as antidepressants have helped keep things in check as Mr T is still there he just doesn’t seem to bother me. I have read people saying they don’t want to go down that route but they have helped me a great deal in the long term.
