In need of support

Hi again . Today is the worst my tinnitus has been, so many sounds , a drone , alarm clock. Buzzing in my left and my right ear is hissing . I was starting to feel more hopeful and have continued with the fluoxetine which has been just over two weeks . My noise were settling down and Monday was a good day but as I had a bad ear day yesterday I took 4mg of Diazepam for the first time which made my tinnnitus ramp up! . I can hardly think straight today and feeling very alone. I am still off work and my wife is adamant that my tinnitus is stress related which I am sure it is but how can you habituate to so many noises .

I am very scared my life will never be the same and I am drained . I could cope with two noises but with some many I am very frightens and just don’t know who to turn to.

Have you spoken to the guys on the BTA helpline Dean? They're not going to be able do anything immediate, but they can offer a T related shoulder to cry on if nothing else.

Reply

No but I will. I think the diazepam I took yesterday as not helped so I won’t be taking that again.

I just can believe I have some many sounds, I am sure my anxiety and stress are making it worse .

Thanks for responding.

Best wishes

Dean

Hang in there Dean, things get better in a short time

I find my Tinnitus is louder in the winter months and starts to calm down around the end of March leading to Spring. Curiously , this coincides with our neighbours using their central heating less, and as I have Hyperacusis in my Right Ear most of the range of sounds I hear completely vanish leaving the familiar ringing of mild Tinnitus . In a nutshell the disturbing variety of sounds leaves me. I am sure specialist hearing aids with White Noise technology will greatly ease your suffering .

I hope you see a specialist soon. I am convinced your hearing two separate conditions and come the mild weather things will drastically change for the better.

I had a similar start to the world of sound. It was bloody awful ! I was hearing WW 2 type sirens in my head for the first months. And it wasn't Tinnitus.

Good luck Dean, I hope this helps in some small way.

Hi , unfortunately I have found the white noise generators make my tinnitus worse. , it makes my right ear hiss very loudly . I have gone back to using the hearig aid function only .

Today my left ear sound has changed again with a permanent loud buzz and a drilling sound , my right ear and head still persist also. My left ear t has never changed in 13 years but I guess with my current stress levels everything is changing.

I am exhausted and just hope it’s my antidepressants messing up the brain whilst it gets used to them, although it’s been 2 and half weeks.

I see the hearing therapist again next month and this is my 4th week off work. Last week I had some positive days this week is draining me.

I sure I have severe tinnitus and In trying to destrress after spent the last 10 years full of anxiety and stress.

How do you get tested for hypercausis?

Best wishes

Dean

U hit the nail on the head, antideppressants does effect the brain, sometimes causes this and stopping antidressants can also be a culprit,,have you changed antidepressants ?

Hi , unfortunately it’s still tough times. There have been or days when it’s calmer but I have lost my job as a result of the condition as o was on probation. I’m trying to remain calm but the tinnitus is relentless. I will however purchasing the tinnitus desensitisation treatment from the private tinnitus clinic , subject to my funding from the insurance charity that looks after People like myself who have worked in the industry and have fallen on hard times

Hope you are doing well

Keep up the hydration too....and stress definitely makes T worse. Unfortunately our limbic system is very closely aligned to the auditory system and when the two get together our emotional state is very wobbly!

Every best wish - we all know the despair but we can all look forward to the good times when we can change focus and be calmer.

Hi Dean ! I wss just wondering if the sounds change when you leave your house or your usual neighbourhood or do they stay the same ? This is important to establish whether you have both Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. Many people have both. Furthermore, the loud buzz and drilling sound are not classic Tinnitus but fit Hyperacusis to a tee. Your Audiologist will ask you more about the range of sound you are experiencing probably with a view for hearing aids. But as far as I know the NHS do not offer treatment for Hyperacusis barr white noise hearing aids which take 2 years to work before you are free of Hyperacusis. Alternatively, the RNID at Ayr in Scotland do a kind of Pink noise therapy for a nominal fee, or used to,a few years back.Failing that, you could send off for a Pink noise CD from a web-site in the US but it is risky beacuse you need a trained specialist to moniter your progress. If you have money to burn, there is a Tinnitus hospital in Edinburgh charging 4 grand for a quiet life with no guarantee as is standard, for private hospitals in the UK. Having said all this, mild Hyperacusis is tolerable to an extent. Full blown Hyperacusis is a descent into hearing hell and, thankfully, rare. I read about a guy from Liverpool who could hear fizzing and gargling sounds and loud splashing waterfalls and thumping inside his ears: it was Hyperacusis, his brain had tuned inside his own body, the gargling and splashing noise were his stomach acid swirling around inside his own abdominal cavity,as loud as sound in the external world. I once briefly lost sound from my surrounding environment wherby,my Ears went muffled and all I could hear was s hurricane or rushing sound which was my breathing alongside banging and clattering of my teeth grinding together. And it was all so loud I could not hear the noise of the bus I was s on at the time.

I get a buzzing and drilling noise like you do but both disappear by summertime. Only to comeback again next winter.

Anyway I'm sure you will be OK Dean. I habituated after 3 months. I went from 3 hours sleep to 6 or 7 hours now

Best Wishes.

Hi , thanks again for your response . I don’t seem to have any change when I go outside. I just seem to wake up with different noise. I’m hoping it’s my reaction to the fluxotine which I have been taking for the last couple of weeks.

It’s just so weird how my left ear which has remained the same for 13 years now has the sound of wind and alarm along with the drone and drill sound.

My right ear is hissing badly today but this comes and goes .

I am at my wits end and just hope this torture balances out , it’s been 5 months with the new right ear and head tinnitus, all sparked off from no using ear plugs when cutting thmy hedges .

I have low frequency hearing loss on both ears and have been anxious and stressed for many years , with my wife attributes my tinnitus and she is probably right .

Life is being sucked out of me and I know I have habituated before to my left ear but with so many noises I find habituation somewhat impossible.

You did well to habituate in 3 months , that is promising.

Best wishes

Dean

Look up all the meds your taking, 3 diff meds i take cause the ringing

Fluoxotine could very well be the culprit, i have read many other peoples stories on forums of others taking antideppressants which blocks the gaba in the brain, and it often happens when stopping the medication as well, causes anxiety and many other symptoms too, dont stop this kind of med all at once (if your thinking of that)

Hi Michele

The fluxotine is calming my tinnitus down , well at least helping me out of my depression and anxiety and has helped me when my original tinnitus 11 years ago.

For me , the antidepressants are not a factor in my tinnitus but appreciate your thoughts.

All weekend my t was raging and the hiss is my right ear was very loud , however today all is much calmer and I am getting more days like this so I am hopeful.

As I am not currently working my stress levels have reduced so I am sure this is helping too, however I must find a new job soon or this will be additional stress. I truly believe my years of stress and anxiety have triggered my new t and my relaxation and breathing help.

I am so hoping my tinnitus desensitisation treatment at he tinnnitus clinic helps but this comes at a very high cost

Take care

Dean

Thanks Dean ! It is important to find out if your noises are related to Hyperacusis because you can do something about that once you find the source. Your Hissing in your right ear is Tinnitus without a doubt. Overall, I think you have a form of Accustic Trauma it depends on whether it is short or long exposure decible Trauma .

One last point, what kind of heating do you use in your house.?

You will get better Dean, just help your Brain ignore the sounds.

Best Wishes.

Hi there . Thanks your input. I only used h hedge trimmer for 15 mins and my wife used it for several hours but I guess as I already had tinnnitus this was the problem albeit I had habituated.

We heat our house by radiators , powered by our main oil supply ???

I fear the hiss will be the hardest to overcome and I thought this and gone but it has again been with me for several days .

Best wishe

The hissing only changes form, for example,it morphs into a ringing noise and seems to be connected with either too much sleep or too little ? About your heating. Electric heating is the best and very quiet, but your nighbours systems, are they electric too ? This is important because the drone noise from gas heating is amplified in people with Hyperacusis to perhaps 200 percent, way beyond normal levels . Curiously, your own gas heating sounds normal, it's the next doors is the problem for hyper sensitive people. Hyperacusis is sometimes called ' superhearing ' I can hear not only my neighbours central heatimg but half our streets! One last point, your house is it near to shops or supermarkets or factories ? If so, Hyperacusis is a distinct source of your of sound variety.

As for your Tinnitus and hearing loss, sorry there is no magic bullet for it yet. However, a few weeks ago I read in the Daily Mail health section about research involving an injection for hearing loss which may open a back door for a cure for Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. God knows how long it take for it to be approved and get to the public.

Anyway keep your chin up Dean.

Hi Dean,

I hope you're feeling better today. I was on fluoxetine, but didn't find it very helpful. Also been on amitriptyline for a while, but side effects were a bit wearing. I've been on citalopram for a year now (prescribed by a consultant) and it's been by far the best for helping me cope with my severe tinnitus. It's been a bit rough of late after a couple of nights out where it was too noisy and I let my guard down. Undoubtedly would have been off work in the past, but I've managed to ride it out and I put it down in part at least to the citalopram. Might be worth giving it a try. Also, just keep yourself busy with something, that always helps me.

Best Regards,

Chris
