A step back

I recently posted to say my tinnitus seemed to improving, well maybe I was a bit hasty as over the last week, I've noticed its been spiking again. Don't know if this is down to the colder weather or build up to Christmas making me more stressed? Or maybe it's a bit of both. I've also noticed a sound in my other ear that freaked me out in the early hours of this morning, I woke up around 4am and could hear ringing in my left ear and had a bit of a panick attack. Now I went out last night to my works Christmas party, a medieval banquet, which was fun. But there wasn't any loud music but a room full of 30 people chatting as you do. So can only assume it's this that has set it off and I just have to hope it settles down and remind myself not to pay attention to it as I'm sure that's what causes T to become permanent. If it doesn't settle will phone audiology and see if I can make an appointment to speak to my audiologist as I think early intervention is best. I really don't want tinnitus to start in my other ear so I'm praying this is just temporary.

Hi David,

The t in my left ear seems to have settled again to it's lower not bothering me level for which im grateful. Your right about the weather conditions as it does appear to have an impact on levels of T. Its been very windy today too.

I do keep my ears covered now When it's cold or windy.

Have you had snow? Stay safe if you have.

Thanks and take care. Lesley

Hi Lesley we had rain today but tonight it’s minus 3 so sharp frost my Tinnitus has been quiet all day I left my hearing aid in last night and wondering if hearing my oasis rain unit on had something to do with it but I am lucky my tinnitus does reduce to nothing and as Nix Wray on the BTA said once your brain gets used to the practice of reducing your tinnitus it will do again and again may it last . I empathise - I've got my head around a lotown in life , but not tinnitus 😊It could be the cold - mine has been worse these last few days , zooming round my head like a swarm of bees rather than being in my ears . I dont do Christmas so it's maybe the temperature on the ears but also how it affects the nervous system. I also now have a severe headache so doubt I'll be out snowballing, more likely looking out the window down from my bed. Keepic warm and cozy .

Keeping warm and cosy sounds bliss to me... I've got my T is in my ears and not my head, it must be even more difficult to manage Lindsey. Mine does also seem to get worse when the atmospheric lows come along too so could be related.

Thanks Lesley x

Hi Lesley, oh dear, not nice to read. I would put your spike down to your brain/ears having to cope with the chattering of 30 people. My T spikes in such circumstances. And yes, I occasionally have a different sound in my good ear which goes after about 20 seconds or so.

The important thing is to remember that your T will calm down again; keep your ears warm, distract yourself with something nice and keep well hydrated - i believe that drinking a glass of water regularly is good for my brain and reduces my T. I

By the way, we have had continual snow in Shropshire since Friday afternoon and we are snowed in! Lovely to walk in the woods though.

Hope it is calming down already, love and best wishes, Angela xx

Thank you David, Lindsey and Angela for coming to my rescue,

I have to thankfully say that the noise in my left side/ear has settled down so think it was due to listening to 30 people all chatting (amazing how loud people talking can be in a small sized room) that set it off but I've not had it that bad before in an ear that normally doesn't spike. When T first started it was only on one side but gradually over time, it has begun to appear on my left side but it's never bothered me until the other night. It' s a relief that it's settled though.

We haven't had any snow yet but it's been very windy today, it's going to get colder though next week so we may yet see some of the white stuff. I do wear a hat out nowadays otherwise the wind whistles through my hearing aide which isn't pleasant.

My sister has had snow today and it's laid thickly so she built a snowman to show my nephew as he is disappointed we haven't had any.

Hope you stay safe over next few days and I'm very grateful for all your support

Love n best wishes Lesley xxx

Hi again Lesley, very nice to hear it has settled down. I think we can cope with the effects of socialising as long as we know it will settle again to what is normal for us - ha ha as if tinnitus is normal!!!! As soon as we have a spike we have to remain calm and be confident it will go as the more it worries us, the longer it stays

We now have a foot of snow in Shropshire- no more is forecast but temperatures are going down to minus 12 in rural areas. I did wrap up and go for a walk and enjoyed chatting with folk on the way. All schools closed so nice to see children on their sledges.

Love and best to you, Angela xx

Hi Leslie, I hope by the time you're reading this things are settlling down to your normal self. I know how rattled a new sound or a change can feel to an ofherwise good Ear, it leaves a pit in the gut and real worry but I find it is only temporary and soon it should settle down for you. Having said this, I find Tinnitus more unsettling in one Ear than in two? When you fully Habituate it makes no difference whatever. My Tinnitus is louder than normal and like yourself I put it down to the cold weather or even serotonin deficiency as I know after using my light box I feel better. One more point, alcohol on top of a meal apparently can create a Tinnitus spike: I tested this out and it works. It was a big meal and it was winter time.

I hope your better now, and your right, get in early for treatment.

Best wishes.

Hello Lesley,

It's sometimes a bumpy road we T sufferers travel, but I'm confident all the new sounds we encounter along the way are only temporary but it's still unnerving when this happens, the thing to remember is don't annalise the sounds too much if you can help it as you well know this only exasperates the problem which is what we don't want to happen, Christmas to many is a stressful time and me being Barr humbug I'm glad of the time off from work. I'm pretty sure things will settle so try not to worry.

Take care.

Dave, x
