T staying loud all the time

10 days ago my T was through the roof so i used the white noise on my aids to try and help distract my brain but as my T is very loud the white noise setting is very high, 75db in fact (my T is louder) so i put it on remembering my audiologist had said "dont use it for more than 2 hours at a time or youll damage your hearing" and hoped things would improve, but in my past experience when its loud as soon as i wake it NEVER goes down that day anyway i had the noise on and because my T was so loud i couldnt hear the white noise and forgot about it being on, later that night i pressed the control on aids for different settings and then to my horror realised that the noise had been on for hours!!!!!!!!!! my T wa still loud so i wnet to bed hoping next day would be different but sadly it wasnt i thought the very thing ive tried to avoid, making my hearing worse and inso doing making T louder, ive stayed away from my love of music and using headphones, i play drums with ear plugs(very occasionally now) avoid anything that would affect my hearing and NOW, the very thing designed to help T has made it worse!!!!!!!!!!! i cant belaieve ive been so stupid but i was in a really bad place when this happened so my T has been constantly loud since donr know what to do to get it down now!!!!!!!! DESPERATE!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi drumcraw.

I too use a hearing aide with built in masker and do find i have to wear it for most of the day if my T is loud and although i can adjust the volume to just under the level of my T, it isnt always enough to distract my brain especially when Im in a noisy environment . I quite often fall asleep with it in too which Im sure isnt right but its better than constantly hearing the whistling sound. My audiologist has never told me i could damage my hearing further by having it too loud and they set the volumn on it at its highest level that is comfortable for me. Maybe you need to go back to your audiologist and see if they can do this with yours. Before i started using it, i was a bit mystified on why they recommend using sound therapy via hearing aides when at the same time youre advised not to listen to loud noises/music via headphones. It seems to counteract the advice but i have to say that whilst it doesnt seem to be helping me to habituate, it certainly makes it more bearable and i really feel for you if this isnt happening. Hope you get some relief soon.

Hello Drumcraw. Sorry that you are having a bad patch. It must be bad. I use my maskers in the evening. I put it in my left ear and it cuts down the T in my right. The brain is a funny thing. I have hyperacusis in my left ear so the white noise cuts it down. My audiologist said to use it as necessary. Not really sure what that means. I went to the theatre and had it on for 4hours. It was the only way that I could listen to and enjoy the show.

Hope that you get some peace.

It is a funny thing trying to gauge loudness. The audiologist says that it is usually about 60dbs. If I sit in a quiet room then the T it will escalate. It will fill my whole head. I am amazed that the neighbours can't hear it.

On the other hand if I stimulate my brain i.e. the gym, it goes quieter. The left ear feeds of sound and never goes quiet.

The brain is a strange bit of kit. I hope that some day they get to the bottom of T and give us all some peace and quiet.

Hope that you have better days.

Ade
