Last night for the very first time I tried a white noise app . I decided on waves, I set it all off into my Boom box and settled down to get some kip when my husband says 'hey that's a bit loud isn't it ? Well man I responded of course it is I have to be able to hear it above my T's you banana ! It worked extremely well and I manage to get some kip - which is more than can be said for my husband crashing waves not his bag 😂

It needs to be set below your tinnitus sound so your bain works hard to pick up the lower sound you have chosen so your bain learns to ignore the tinnitus and help your brains natural filter not see tinnitus as a threat and will help you adapt in the day too!

Hope the info helps you.

Hi Jam, at least you got a night of sleep, but Glynis is so right, we still need to be able to hear our T through the white noise. In my early days, I had to really concentrate on my background sounds (always rainfall) and try to help my brain ignore the T. Love, Angela xx

Angela, occasionally I have a shuddering vibration with a fluttering sound - like a muscle spasm or a twitch in my ear I can feel my ear moving inside and it sounds like my ear is trying to pop like when you are on a plane . I find it quite scary, why does it do that ? It's all very odd, sorry to hassle you

Hi Jam, sorry but I do not know or understand why tinnitus causes these horrible physical sensations. When I first got it, as well as the intrusive noise and head pain, I had muscle contractions in my body and legs. The most awful time of my life. I was prescribed Mirtazapine anti anxiety pills and eventually these sensations stopped.

Is there anyone on this forum who can explain why tinnitus causes such odd sensations?!? Angela xx

Try some pillow speakers, to keep your hubby safe from the rain through the night.

Thank you, Angela! I never knew that about white noise, so I never really used it, finding the louder noise to be too intrusive. Why has no one mentioned this before? I've had my tinnitus since the "80's! You're a star!

Hi Corrianne, it is not me who is the star, it is all the amazing folk on this friendly forum and the BTA website. You will find all you need to help manage your tinnitus through reading all the helpful posts. Over 2 years ago, when it happened to me, I felt so alone and was so thankful to have found this forum. Non-sufferers cannot possibly imagine what it like to have tinnitus; I certainly didn't! I see it as having to not battle against it, but live alongside it, or indeed living through it. Love and best wishes, Angela xx

ps it is, I think, important to surround yourself with background noise all of the time (and how I used to like complete silence before I got T). When you have the tv or radio on, and especially the car radio (or whatever it is called nowadays) - don't have it so loud that you cannot hear your tinnitus. As michaelee says " your brain cannot habituate to a sound it cannot hear". Angela xx
