Betahistine

Hi all ,My T has got really bad tones have changed its like an alternating high and low pitched really loud tone 24 hours a day a bit like the alien ship in ET lol. My doctor has prescribed Betahistine which to be honest after taking for nearly a week has made no difference. I also found out whilst at the doctors that ENT do not want to see me after a mix up with appointments they discharged me, so my GP will not do another referral. I have an appointment at the end of October to see my hearing therapist, but to be honest this noise is so bad. I just don't know what to do. I work in a school and after going back to work after the holidays it seems to have got a lot worse. I have invested in a sound therapy system which I will try tonight. Any advice would be helpful thank you

You poor thing, I've been up all night with mine and now have to spend the day working in school - it is very hard. I went to see an ENT yesterday privately and he was rubbish - maybe you need a recommendation of a good one .Please let me know if you find one . All the very best

Hi

Sorry to hear about your Tinnitus noise like thousands of other suffers you’re going through what we all do I’m afraid can I suggest first of all try and relax do the things you normally do you will find eventually your Brain will start to lose some interest in the noise you are hearing and push it into the background this can take time but stick with it Anxiety is the worst enemy when it comes to Tinnitus

For me the worst time is at night Tinnitus feeds on your dreams and you may have noticed an increase in the tone level of your Tinnitus there’s not a lot you can do about dreaming but having a quiet room doesn’t help you just concentrate on your Tinnitus so you are doing the right thing by getting something to help but remember always play the sounds on the machine just below the level of your Tinnitus this will help with hibernating the Tinnitus and help you sleep there will be good times with Tinnitus and not so good but you do adept and adjust but never let Tinnitus win life’s too short .

Hi Elaine,

Im not sure what dose of Betahistine you are on 8 or 16mg.

You can take 16 mg 3 times a day so have a chat with your doctor.

I work in a school also.

Do what you can to relax after work and try get outdoors at break but I know how loud the school yard can get.

Love glynis x p

Hi, way back in 2001 when T came my way, after a few weeks my GP gave me some serc tablets. These had no effect so after another few weeks he doubled the dose, a few days after this the T in my right ear vanished and the volume in my left ear reduced considerably. This was instant as if someone had flicked a switch. Who knows if the serc was responsible? However a few years later when the volume of T had increased I asked him if I could try serc again. On this occassion T stayed the same.

Best wishes

Kenny

Hi Elaine,

I was prescribed Avamys which works really well at keeping my eustachian tubes clear, but as far as I am aware makes little impact on the tinnitus. When the tinnitus is at its worst I crave escape from a noisy environment, but the catch 22 is that a quiet environment highlights and focuses me on the tinnitus!! A trick is to become totally absorbed in something which redirects your and your brain's focus on the tinnitus. While this is difficult and often exhausting trying to achieve, it does offer windows of relief. I am ever hopeful that one day I will just realise that the tinnitus is no longer bothersome as it was for many years before this last 3 years. At present the tinnitus is at its worst and I am frankly exhausted from trying different things, but will always try something new!

I really hope you can find some pockets of peace. It seems that the emphasis is on us as individuals to find them as there is very little consistency in understanding and approach to tinnitus available through the NHS.

Nicola :)

Hi I'm a drama teacher in a secondary school so completely understand how you must be feeling in a school environment!

I used to be on Betahistine. It's a long term drug so I was told it would take a couple of months to work. I came off of it when changing up meds and actually found no difference so have not gone back onto it.

HOWEVER... I do now have a hearing aid and it is the BEST! Tinnitus is so slight when I have it in that I don't notice it during the day. The hearing aid also helps with directional sound as I have lost the lower sounds in my right ear.

At first the hearing aid was hard in the classroom but 6 months later I don't know what I would do without it!

Thank you all for your comments and advice. I have learnt a lot in the past couple of weeks from you all. Update on the sound therapy system is it helps quite a bit of a night for now. more than any app on my phone so that's a good thing managing around 3 good hours sleep now as opposed to zero.
