Hi I have recently begun suffering from ringing in my right ear. I have had it around 3 weeks and there has been no improvement so far. I tried earcandling, ear drops, decongestion tablets and antibiotics which the doctors prescribed. I went to the doctors this morning and he said inside my ears looks fine and referred me to look on this website. He wont refer me for further tests because I have no other symptoms such as sickness or hearing loss. Obvisouly If things get worse I will be going back and demanding further investigation but I understand what he is saying. I have been listening to relaxing music on youtube while falling to sleep which I enjoy anyway but have to admit I am worried. It a high pitched ringing and I have no idea what could have caused it. I live in a quiet village which kind of makes me hear the noise more when I am sometimes in my house. Its gets worse when I have been laid on that ear the tone of the ringing changes a bit.

Does anyone have any advice or have suffered from this ? I am really hoping that it is temporary. Ps I am 26 years old.

Welcome to the BTA forum.

A refural to ENT is usually after 6 months as usually tinnitus settles down or you adapt to it and if showing other symptoms then you will get seen sooner.

Keep relaxing music on around you and sounds throughout the night to help you sleep.

If you find sleeping troublesome or feeling low due to the sound then pop in to see your doctor ....

Hello, have you heard about HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) for tinnitus. There is a lot of research which suggests that if you start this painless and affordable therapy within the first two months of getting tinnitus your chances of your tinnitus becoming permanent are greatly reduced. It's definitely worth considering - permanent tinnitus is a horrible condition - I should do whatever you can to avoid it. Just Google HBOT and your location to find a centre which offers it near you.

heidiw2 has made no topics of their own which suggests to me that they have a vested interest in promoting HBOT

I would wait and use low volume masking sound (music, radio, nature sounds) when it's quiet.

Moogle,

Some members post but a lot like just to read and members from other countries seem to plug H-BOT more...

Hello Jess

I hope that you T is just a temporary blip and that things return to normal very soon. It is a horrible condition to be stuck with. the BTA site has lots of helpful advice. I suggest that you keep pestering your Gp if the T continues. Don't get obsessive but try everything. there is no one cure for T but some people stumble over something that works for them.

Good luck and I wish you peace and quiet.

I would definitely advise that you follow the previous recommendation for HBOT. The last thing you should do as a new tinnitus sufferers is just sit back, listen to some soothing sounds and hope it doesn't become permanent. HBOT has been shown to reduce the probability of tinnitus becoming permanent for those who have only been suffering from tinnitus for two to three months.

The only people who have anything to gain from your tinnitus becoming permanent are the audiology companies who will have a new permanent customer for their ineffective products.

There was a Cochrane Review into HBOT and hearing loss and tinnitus. Cochrane Reviews are the "gold standard" for examining evidence for a particular treatment. This is what they had to say about hyperbaric oxygen therapy:

"We found some evidence from seven small trials of generally poor quality, that hearing may be improved in people with ISSHL and possibly that tinnitus may also be improved. This may only be true if HBOT is used within two weeks of the onset of problems and there is no evidence that HBOT can help people who have been deaf for some months."

The full review can be read here: doi.org/10.1002/14651858.CD...

Well that sounds promising - there is some evidence that those who have only had tinnitus for a short time will be helped by HBOT. Definitely worth trying as there is very little else effective on offer.

We could do with some more research into HBOT - though I imagine that some of the audiology companies which control much of the research money might not be keen on a rival therapy which could eat into their profits.

I think all newbie T sufferers should not only be aware of the possible not probable advantages but also the possible not probable disadvantages, contraindications and risks!

Been suffering from tinnitus for about a month now. Went to doctors but they weren't interested - "not much we can do" etc. Tried a few of the sound therapy apps but they haven't helped very much. Going to look into HBOT now I've found out about it. Worth a try as I'm only in the early stages and don't want my tinnitus to be permanent.
