Sound Therapy Systen and Holiday Blues.

Hi all.

I'm looking to purchase a sound therapy system as I'm realising more and more that I need to be surrounded by sounds around the house and not so much outside the house. I'm using my iPhone with Bluetooth speakers for now, which is fine. However, most people I've spoken to say a proper sound therapy system that uses the mains and is portable is worth a look at. I alsways need to fall sleeps with sounds in the background now and I'm starting to wake up to them also. I'm finding that it does seem to set you up for a while at the beginning of the day. If anyone has any tips or advice on a good model worth the investment I would love to hear your opinion.

I'm on holiday at the moment an have had a couple of really bad days where nothing is masking it out. It's only what I can describe as a high pitched roar, which probably has a lot to do with Italian wine and like of sleep, so my bad. Interesting thing was however, that at the airport at three in the morning waiting for an early flight out with lots of normal human and ambient sounds that would normally mask it out, nothing was touching it, the first time I've been really bothered by it really. I don't like flying so I'm guessing anxiety and lack of sleep may have been the cause there. Regardless, it's not ruining my holiday it can roar all it bloody well wants. I hope your all well :)

Morning Dave

I found an official sound oasis tinnitus app. It was the lite version and worked really well last night with my own speaker. I guess they want you to buy and use it with there own bluetooth speaker that's out there now. Most people seem to talk about the S-650 as the best out there for general use. I do use an iPhone and have a couple of soundlink mini's, so, I'm not sure the 650 is worth the expense. However, I've heard it's really good at what it does and is more tailored for a tinnitus sufferer. Thanks for replying and the follow, it's been returned. Any app tips or tips in general would be more than appreciated. 🙂

Hi Steve,

I am a believer in using sound therapy especially in quiet surroundings and at night. If you intend to set up speakers throughout your home, so whatever room you enter there is background sound, then I don’t think this is a good idea as it’s possible to mask the tinnitus so that it is not heard, and therefore your brain will not be able to habituate to the tinnitus.

If you intent to purchase a couple sound machines and use one for the bedroom and kitchen for instance, this will suffice. The brain cannot habituate to tinnitus unless it can hear it. Please read the post below which you might find helpful.

Sound Machines.

Sound Oasis makes the best sound machines in my opinion and are specifically designed for people with tinnitus although anyone will benefit using one. The quality of their digital sounds will be far superior to any homemade sounds that you compile if your intention is to use them for sound enrichment.

A sound machine can be used night and day but do their magic best when we are in deep sleep. It supplies the brain and auditory system with sound enrichment. Over time, the tinnitus is pushed further into the background helping to make it less intrusive during waking hours.

The Sound Oasis, model: S-650 is popular and the one I usually recommend people buy. It comes with a variety of sounds on two sound cards. Additional cards can be purchased. The S-850 travel, is more expensive and compact. It has 18 on-board digital sounds and doesn’t use cards. Some people might be bothered by the clock’s blue backlight at night-time. It dims but cannot be turned completely off; the S-650 backlight can be set to switch off automatically.

The S-5000 deluxe is larger and more sophisticated than the two models above and can only be mains operated. It uses a three-speaker system, that has a subwoofer for increased depth and definition to the sound. According to Oasis, over 140 on-board sound combinations are possible. It also has a FM/AM radio and an external sound source can be selected via the auxiliary input. There are a host of other features.

The purpose of using a sound machine is to have it playing in the background without drawing attention to itself unlike a radio. For this reason music isn’t the best source to use at night for sound enrichment, as it will draw the Brain’s attention and could delay the habituation process.

The advice of Professor Pawel Jastreboff, developer of TRT. Sound enrichment particularly at night should be used by anyone that has intrusive tinnitus. I would go as far to say, it is imperative to do so if you want to help yourself. Over time you will get used to having sound around you both during the day and night. I find it strange to be in a very quiet room now having used a sound machine for so long.

Michael

PS: Many people have contacted me after they have habituated to their T and stopped using sound enrichment at night, only to find their tinnitus becoming intrusive again. The rule of thumb: try to avoid quiet rooms and surroundings especially at night by using a sound machine.

I have written and article on tinnitus, treatments and coping methods that you might find helpful. If you would like a copy, then please send me your email by private messenger.

Just to say that the preparation for a holiday and the hanging around for a flight will have put your anxiety levels on a 'high' .... no matter how organised you are. Extra stress certainly means less tolerance - r e l a x! Also you don't have any work challenges on holiday so your brain decides what to focus on - unfortunately! Seek distraction and have a fab time.

Personally I've never bothered with a sound machine, I've been quite happy with phone apps. One that I always recommend is "Relax Melodies: Sleep Sounds" by Ipnos software available on the Google Play store and probably IOS as well. There is a free version which has a good selection of sounds but it's worth paying the couple of £s for the pro version which gives you a lot more sounds to choose from. One of the features that I like is that it lets you mix different sounds together and adjust the relative volume of each sound and then save the result as a favourite.

Michael has written a good over view of the various Sound Oasis systems available, but has forgotten to mention that the BTA stock most of them! :D We also have a 28 day trial so if you don't like one, you can return it.

tinnitus.org.uk/shop (which reminds me, I must change the listing and say that the S-650s are back in stock!)

Happy holidays!
