HI Sarah,

I am sorry to hear that you're going having a tinnitus spike at the moment and hope that it calms down for you soon. It would help if you tell us what originally caused the onset of your tinnitus as many things can be responsible? Exposure to loud noise is the most common cause of tinnitus.

Below is a post that I wrote on another tinnitus forum that you might find helpful. It is just my opinion and not medical fact.

Are spikes from loud noise permanent?

Someone recently asked me, whether a spike in tinnitus caused by loud noise would be permanent? I don’t think there is a definitive answer, because tinnitus is a complex condition and if hyperacusis is also present it can complicate matters further. Some people habituate to tinnitus but their hyperacusis hasn’t fully cured and this can cause tinnitus to spike.

When a person first develops tinnitus and it was caused by loud noise they have to be careful in future. Tinnitus can and does spike for many people and this is not necessarily caused by loud noise or sounds. After a while it usually returns to baseline or into its normal rhythm. Danger can present itself after a person habituates and the tinnitus has reduced to mild or moderate levels for most of the time. If one isn’t careful, it can be easy to forget and slip back into the old lifestyle of: listening to music through headphones. Attending clubs, concerts and the cinema where sound levels can be quite high.

I believe a person with tinnitus should attend clubs, concerts and the cinema if they want to, providing they use noise-reducing earplugs to protect themselves. However, one should remember that nothing is one hundred percent safe. My advice is to stay clear of large standing floor speakers and if you’re at a concert don’t go to near the front stage where the music is likely to be booming out at high sound levels.

In many instances people will get a warning when visiting these places. If the decibel levels are too high their tinnitus might spike. Usually the tinnitus will return to baseline. However, some people do not pay attention to these warnings and continue to subject their ears to loud sounds and think they are perfectly safe because they are wearing earplugs. Under these circumstances the tinnitus might spike again and this time it might become permanent. I am saying might because nothing is for certain. In my opinion a person with tinnitus needs to follow the warnings their auditory system and tinnitus is telling them.

Regarding headphones. Many people have contacted me after they have habituated to tinnitus and returned to using headphones and listened to music through them at low volume. All of them have noticed an increase in their tinnitus. Some of them noticed their tinnitus spiked but carried on listening to music through headphones and then the tinnitus increased to a higher and more permanent level. It must be said that some people with tinnitus use headphones and have no adverse effects and that is perfectly fine.

My opinion on this is, anyone that has tinnitus which was caused by loud noise exposure, shouldn’t listen to any type of audio through headphones even at low level. It saddens to say, if a person doesn’t heed the warning signs their auditory system and tinnitus is telling them, then they will eventually feel because tinnitus is very unforgiving. It is fine when some people are telling others what they want to hear: "listen to music through headphones because life is for living". “Go to the club as often as possible you’re safe with earplugs. If your tinnitus increases you will be the one that will be in the suffering.

I have read many posts, where people had habituated and the tinnitus is low. They returned to listening to music through headphones and clubbing during the week and weekends. Some are now regretting this because their tinnitus has increased and they are in distress. Just because a person habituates doesn't mean they can forget everything and carry on in some instances recklessly. You can of course do this but my advice is to do things in moderation and not to excess, because the end result is often returning to ENT for help and visiting tinnitus forums because you are unable to cope.

Since your tinnitus was caused by loud noise I advise you not to spend any money on treatments. You will get the best help and long time aftercare for your tinnitus under the NHS. You are in the very early stages of tinnitus and the best way to treat it is to do nothing for the moment regarding treatment.

Read my post: New to tinnitus what to do? It is on this forum. By all means talk to your GP and get a referal to ENT. Your tinnitus will calm down. Try to avoid quiet rooms and surroundings especially at night by using sound enrichment. More is explained in my Post: New to tinnitus.

i what about body base theraphy &Cognitive behavioural therapy

Tinnitus retraining therapy by the nhs

Sarah. I know how you feel believe me for I have had tinnitus for 21 years and have a lot of exprience with it especially when it was caused by loud noise. CBT (cognitive behavioura therapy) is not right for you at this time, nor is any other treatment except something your Dr prescribes if you're feeling stressed.

The best treatment for you at this moment is to do nothing. The ear is a very delicate organ and often with time it will recover. Use sound enrichment as I've advised and I strongly suggest you do not listen to music through headphones even at low volume.

I have written an article on tinnitus that is quite long. It covers causes of tinnitus, treatment and coping methods. If you would like a copy send me private message with your email address and I'll send it to you. It is in PDF format. Other people on this forum have requested a copy and I have sent it to them.

Your tinnitus will improve with time and you are likely to make a good recovery, but please don't waste your money on paying for private treatment at this time.

its not private its on the NHS in the united kingdom

in reply to

It doesn't matter sarah if it's on the NHS. Most ENT doctors prefer to start treatment for tinnitus when a patient has had the condtion for 6 months and I fully agree with this. Most people habituate to tinnitus within 6 months and it can sometimes go away.

In the early stages of tinnitus which I believe you are in as you said you've had it for 3 weeks? This is far too soon to start treatment such as CBT in my opinion. A person new to tinnitus is usually experiencing stress, anxiety and this takes time to settle.

Try to relax and be calm and you'll gradually start to feel better. More is explained in my article. The BTA also have plenty of information for people new to tinnitus.

I say again, the best treatment for you or anyone else new to tinnitus which was caused by noise exposure, is to leave it alone. Use sound enrichment especially at night. Talk to your GP if you're feeling stressed and get a referral to ENT.

well at the moment just want my tinnitus to settle down to normal pitch again i really hope it dose at the moment is a roaring humming its never like this its more low

in reply to

What you are experiencing is typical of what many people new to tinnitus experience. It will settle down but the more you worry about it the more intrusive it will appear to be.

i had tinnitus since 2010 or 2011

in reply to

I thought you were new to tinnitus? If you have had it since 2010-2011 that is a long time. So, is it the loud noise at the club, party that caused this spike?

in reply to

no it was at a party that i got my tinnitus but the anxiety was for the high pitched sounds thats all

in reply to

well i had it 3 weeks my tinnitus was fine until Tuesday due to stress and anxiety , i try to relax but the high pitch is dont going down .

in reply to

Tinnitus goes up and down and plays all sorts of tricks with a person in the early stages. Your brain needs time to get used to it. This is the reason treatments like TRT, CBT are not recommended in the early stages of tinnitus

As time goes on you will habituate and things will be a lot easier I am sure of that.

Hi. Sorry you are struggling. Sorry all I can offer is empathy and understanding. Mine is always louder than any external.noise so there is nothing I can do , fortunately I am.not feeling anxious just in a lot of pain. Others will be able to share their positive stories and for that I am.pleased 😊

Just remember you aren't alone. X
