Are you sure they said 50%? I have just checked the peer reviewed literature, and a review paper says Postoperative vision loss (POVL) following non-ocular surgery, the incidence of 0.056 to 1.3% and that is for all types of surgery, not just polyp removal.

If you are at all worried I would suggest you talk to them again and ask them to clarify. And rather than ask for % or probabilities, ask for absolute risk. That is, out of 100 people undergoing this procedure, how many lose their vision.
