Can I take him on holiday?

My partner has decompensated cirrhosis - and is currently in hospital with hyponatremia. He suffers from anxiety and finds it hard to eat - except for Ensure, which seems to be keeping him going. We hope his condition will stabilise soon though.

He very much wants to go on holiday and I think that maybe being away would actually do him good, at least in the short term. Life is for living after all - and a different environment might help.

Has anyone else gone on holiday with a cirrhosis sufferer and what problems did you encounter if any ?

Any advice or experience gratefully received.

Going on a holiday can be a good thing, but I'd suggest not travelling abroad. Two main reasons. Firstly, with decompensation things can change, or complications can arise, pretty quickly and secondly, you'd probably struggle getting any sort of insurance, well at least any that would be of any use, and you definitely wouldn't want to travel without it.

Also don't forget the fatigue side of things. He may not be too keen to go through all the hassle and rigmarole involved with planning or preparing for such a trip. I know for me at that stage I just wanted to curl up in the chair and sleep. Conversely though, having a reason to get up and get about is a good thing.

Hope thats helpful.

Hi that’s a great response from Kristian , I know when I was in hospital I would have loved to get away but as Kritian said it’s hard. The wife and my daughter booked a lodge in camber Sands in a holiday camp it was fantastic, we could still get back to Kings College Hospital if anything happened but just far enough away. Have a great time you will have to do everything so try to take help with you.

Good luck

when I was newly diagnosed and also basically living on Ensure as well. I went on a weekend getaway. My boyfriend thought it would be good to get away. In the beginning so many things go wrong. One thing gets better then something else happens. I was sick and we had to come home. I would advise waiting until his condition stabilizes. It’s hard to be ill somewhere besides your own home or hospital.
