I need to exercise, I have diabetes 2, formed my own diet since 2020 when I got diabetes, but apart from exercise bike 2,000 metres a day, I seem to be on a losing struggle, threatened with Statins, if I go on those will become a "vegetable" [ps have legs like tree trunks at present😵] am presently 15 half stone [whatever that is in metric, am retired?] target under 14 stone/200lbs but cannot see a way of doing it? [have epilepsy for over 50 years, been told next seizure, probably my last!] Also have osteoporosis of the chest, deformed chest!😒 ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Gosh, Adlon57, I’ve just looked at your bio and you have a lot going on in your life. Could your doctor offer you any help? We have a friend who had a non alcoholic fatty liver and who needed to lose weight for a knee operation who had amazing success with Slimming World, he also made some really good friends through doing that and he lost enough weight to have both knees replaced. I think some surgeries can prescribe slimming groups.

Could your doctor prescribe a gym for you? I once used one of the medical referral gym groups, that was lovely too, there were people of all shapes and sizes who were in all sorts of condition, some of them were very, very fragile. You are assessed first and a programme is worked out to suit your needs no matter what state you start in. Although it involved exercise it was pretty gentle and the atmosphere was very caring, the company was good and even better - there not an inch of Lycra in sight either. Also what about chair exercises - maybe you could find a group that offers them - that might suit you, but whatever you do I’d say you need to be very carefully supervised.

I can see why you don’t want to take statins - I don’t want them either. Could you maybe try those Benecol drinks and Flora Pro Active yoghurts and spreads? I can only say ‘you get used to them’.

Hopefully you will get some helpful suggestions in the meantime your 2000metres a day on the bike is pretty good going. Well done.

All the best Fruitandnutcase 👍

I'm seeing my doctor next week about suspected Parkinson's disease, always been in the background, had a negative scan a couple of years ago, but that was reaction to epilepsy medication?😒

I am coming down with yoghurts, my diabetes specialist is a bit of a twerp, always have reaction to his 'new stuff', but think have found good yoghurt mixture now!

Ironically have genetic osteoarthritis knees always a problem, but knees fine🤞 at present must be bike usage?

I was on Statins many years ago, found I was taking extra 'pills' for Statins side effects🙄 my sister was on them, agrees 100% about them🤬

Maybe good weather might come, after 8 months of bad weather, deserve a bit of good sun😎

All the best to you too Adlon57.

It really is awful when you react badly to medication.

I tried statins years ago and had such horrendous side effects that after doing a bit of research like you and your sister I decided I’d rather not bother. Great that the bike is helping you. Cycling outdoors is one thing I miss about having osteoporosis. I used to fall off my bike regularly which is why I was surprised to discover I have it so I’m not keen to start again now I know I have 🚲

We do indeed need some sunshine and warmth after all the awful weather we’ve had. 😎 make the most of it when it arrives. Carry on with your cycling and keep those knees working 😊

Apologies for that outburst Fruitandnutcase a bit macabre, must have hit a nerve😒 There must be safer alternative to Statins, never heard any good thing said about them? At least exercise bike in fully working order, my brother and Uncle had metal knee caps inserted, another friend just had injections into his knees🤫

Done my 2.000 metres for the day👌

Again irony in Feb 2017 I had started a new epilepsy medication, fycompa, I had a seizure because I live on my own, never really found the full story, but I fell off exercise bike and fell onto the pedal, I shattered my chest which was deformed from side effects of meningitis aged 10, I was not fully x-rayed by my local hospital, a couple of pain killers then sent home, I RECKON I broke at least five ribs, three in my sternum, two either side of rib cage, life changing condition, "now untreatable" eventually x-rayed in Royal Belfast in April, my 'local' hospital whom I absolutely abhor😣, don't get any xmas cards from me, and whom are DIRECTLY responsible for my "overall chronic terminal" condition, my broken skull, happened in Jan 2018, again not x-rayed via Lagan Valley Hospital, [my local 'hospital🙄😤🤬] I did not discover how bad my skull was until I had a CT scan in 2021, admitted then due to reaction to AZ covid vaccine.

I have told this before on HU but yes I could do with a long holiday with plenty of sunshine😎

"Move it or Lose It" do some seated exercise classes on line (there is a charge) and there are others. Worth having a look.

hi, go low carb/keto/carnivore. It will help you lose weight and reverse your diabetes. See dr David unwin, gp in Norwood surgery. He has reversed his own diabetes and has helped hundreds of patients to also do this. Losing weight is a side effect of this way of eating. There are other doctors and consultants that do this and talk about it. The public health collaboration are doing a symposium in May in London.

Nah I am afraid one of the reasons I wrote this is my headaches are getting worse, even short walks, ok not flat but 5-10 minutes, I am getting very dizzy, not able to stand for at least 5 minutes later, passing a chemist I told her of my 'vertigo' problem, she suggested probably medicines used for vertigo, might be an option, [doubtful? I can walk downhill no problem😒] I have had this trouble since Jan 2018, the broken skull, Hunter suggestion of Turmeric 👍 has been a considerable relief, but I am obviously going into phase 2 of this, I honestly do not see a reason why I have worsened recently and so dramatically? I am seeing my GP on 13th about a side issue of possible Parkinson's disease, which has always been "in my corner" with my colourful collections of medical conditions🙄 Thanks folks🖐
