Atorvastatin

Hi, I've been prescribed Atorvastatin 20mg for high cholesterol but reading about it, it does have somewhat 'mixed' reviews. Anyone have experience of it for or against and suggestions of what has worked for them with least side effects.

Many thanks for your time

Many thanks for your response, it really doesn't seem to be very popular and many people seem to suggest trying a more recent statin. Thanks for your time!

I was in Atorvaststin and had terrible pains in all my joints and especially legs. Changed to rosuvastatin and even worse as they doubles the dose. Gp appoint next week hopefully find something that doesn't affect me. Could be the dose though as the cardiologist doubles it after HA and I had just started my first dose after changing. X

That's interesting and many people seem to find difficulties with it but less so with others. Apparently my cholesterol is genetic rather than lifestyle so there is little I can do regarding diet, exercise ect. Many thanks for your time

I have hashimotos thyroiditis. Apparently, statins interact with it, so I presume I have no options. My cholesterol is high due to my autoimmune. My veins etc were fine on angiogram but hashimotos raises levels. Lose lose for me apparently. Will see what GP says next week. X

Hello CatLady246, I am new to low thyroid and to taking statins as well. They won't treat my hypothyroid because my TSH is below 10. It was 8.7 at last test. It's Hashimotos. Then statins - artovastatin on 20 mg and seemed OK. Then they want me to take 40mg but after 5 days I got awful sore shoulders and arms which felt like I'd been punched all over. Stopped them yesterday and amazingly much better today.

I read that if you have ckd (I do stage 3) and hypothyroid then statins are difficult for us to take. I don't know if bits just artovastatinvthat I was on or all types.

Thanks for reply. Your TSH is too high though mine is kept between 0.2 and 2. Maybe ask to be referred to Endocrinologist. I had too. Yes statins can cause issue was at Dr today. He has told me to stop was currently on Rosuvastatin as Atorvaststin caused issues hence changing to Rosuvastatin i collected them on 13 march and hadn't started to take them, then the cardiologist doubled my dose afterHA on 13th without me even taking 1. Anyway after visit today Dr said stop them from today and see him in 1 month to see if the joint and bone pain goes away. So fingers crossed that's stops the pain. If not. Who knows. X

It's a challenge and a journey isn't it? I hope you feel much better and either don't need statins or can take something that doesn't have the side effects.I am due another TSH blood test soon and once that's in I will take your advice(thank you) to ask about an endocrinologist.

My impression of the GP is they are NICE and number bound, instead of looking at us clinically and individually.

If we all still had a family GP where they know us a little I think they'd understand us more - but now we are strangers so they can't pick up on our clinical evidence.

Thanks ever so much for replying😊

I've been on a 20 mg dose since February without any side effects at all.

No problems - been on it for years...

I have been using it for over 6 months now. Cholesterol dropped like a brick. Side-effects, not too bad and manageable.

For me, it is ok, but there are others that dont seem to tolerate it as well. I am on 40mg.
