I had sciatica for a few years. It was the worse pain I have ever experience Tthe only treatment that worked was long term physio. and hydrotherapy .I had fifteen sessions of the latter. Some of this was with a physio. in the pool. I also had physio. for many months and still do stretches and other exercises years down the line to ensure it does not return.
Hello, I know how that feels! You have my sympathy. Have you had an MRI to check the cause and extent of the problem? If not, I’d certainly recommend one. Your chiro can refer you privately for £250 or so if you can’t wait for one on the NHS. Then there are treatment options, for example for a bulging disc, Pilates-based exercises, a type of epidural may help or surgery. I had a microdiscectomy operation by a spinal-neurosurgeon for my bulging disc 20 years ago and it was a god-send! I have the occasional flare up when I do too much heavy gardening but my chiro soon sorts me out.
Best wishes.
I've suffered four or five bouts of sciatica over the past 35 years.....the worst I've ever experienced was earlier this year when a disc in my back herniated and trapped my sciatic nerve.....the pain for 20 minutes was off the graph.....I couldn't stand or even sit up for 8 days. The Dr prescribed me morphine and even that didn't fully get rid of the pain.
When I could hobble about with the aid of a walking stick I saw a physiotherapist.
He gave me some exercises to do.....as with physiotherapists I've seen in the past when I said "when do I see you again" he replied "you don't, it's down to you now to do the exercises I've given you".
I've done the exercises religiously at least four times every day and I've been out walking every day.
It's not been easy, I've got nerve damage, my leg still aches but I'm getting my life back......I'm attending Fitsteps classes again and next week I'm trying to ballroom dance again.
Neither my GP or physio recommended back surgery, they both said that the outcome would be better by me regularly doing exercises to strengthen my back.
I had horrible right sided buttock pain and calf pain, the latter being particularly bad when driving. I did endless amounts of stretching and exercises, to no avail. I had a right hip replacement and those pains disappeared completely. I'm not saying that's what's causing your pain, but that the causes of pain aren't always the obvious ones. I hope yours eases off soon.
