MTHFR and Lupus

I noticed that some members have both of these diagnosis as well as Sjogrens. No one ever checked my homocysteine level until after I had Complete Heart Block and was implanted with a Pacemaker/defibulator. I have always felt that if the MTHFR was diagnosed before all the other autoimmune diseases, I may never have progressed to so many issues. I feel by not metabolizing vitamin B’s caused everything.

Hi, I'd agree that not properly metabolising B vitamins may be a significant contributor to a large number of health issues that are not currently being linked or looked at from that perspective. Certainly the case for me. What I wouldn't agree with is that you can 'diagnose' MTHFR. We all have MTHFR in some form, and some have variants (assorted, and common), and some have mutations. What is likely to prove relevant to health is the combination of variants, particularly if they relate to one area of processing, but they also have to have expressed. Just having the variant doesn't tell you if it is (mal)functioning or ever will be - and some SNPs are beneficial. Even the metabolic markers like methylmalonic acid and homocysteine do not rise in everyone (approx 25% that benefit from B12 injections have normal B12, MMA and Hcy). Testing being poor and confusing doesn't help, especially when a basic serum B12 and folate is not even done as part of standard testing. Cheers

On a more humorous note, MTHFR instantly conjures up another name which rather accurately sums up all my health issues!!

Not metabolising Vit B12 (cyanocolamin) OR not absorbing it due to loss of stomach wall intrinsic factor yet another AI destructive disease OR both?👆😱

in which case you will need it by i/m injection!?

Check blood levels!
