Calorie counting is also a bit useless if one eats processed food as it has been studied that real calories can differ from calories said food contains.

Plus naturally we all are individuals! Even up keep calories vary big time based on ones metabolism.

I do calorie counting lol but to try to gain weight or at least to prevent losing more. I do not eat any processed food. Funny tho I have not been giving a one thought for ratio of carbs:protein:fat yet when I add what I have the end of the day reveals it is pretty much perfect.

What do you mean by 'real' calories? Are there false calories? :)

Manufacturer can say calories are 200 but real calories after testing can be for example 400! Was global study so not just about finnish food.

I assume telling real calories is not mandatory so manufacturer can say whatever they want to :O

So when buying processed food even bread a person has to be aware that calories might not match.

Ah, you mean the real number of calories! Really? I didn't know that! What a cheat! Still, processed food is bad for a lot of reasons, not just because they lie about how many calories. But the fact still stands: calorie-counting is useless.

One thing that makes that so obvious is that fat has the highest number of calories pound for pound, but fat is an essential nutrient. Sugar doesn't have that many, but is not essential at all. So, imagine someone counting calories says 'oh, jam has less calories than butter, so I'll just put jam on my toast and leave out the butter - then I can have more jam!' So, they would be filling up on calories totally empty of nutrients. It just doesn't make sense.

Exactly! My calorie counter adds up healthy nutrients and congratulates me every night making right choices :D

But yeah teaching just counting calories is nonsense. You can eat candies all day and think you did the right thing as you only ate the amount you are told to.

It gets worse when people are told that fats kill you. Makes it easier for them to choose something else and think it is smart.

I wonder how long it takes people to get that sugar is just energy and nothing else. Tho it requires people to understand just energy does not keep you going. That you need building materials every day or otherwise your body starts consuming itself.

I think most people never get that.
