Hi, I have just been diagnosed with ibs after 3 years of pain. Had countless tests, the most recent being a defecating proctogram, this showed up a full circumferential inussuception, rectocele & entrocele. I’ve also had a capsule endoscopy which showed all the markers still in my left small bowel. All this seemed to be dismissed & not explained & a diagnosis of ibs was given. I don’t get bloating, or urgency to go to the toilet. My main symptom is pain in left side of abdomen. I do get constipation but I am on oramorph for the pain which can cause this. Can anybody advise whether they think this could be ibs as I don’t seem to have many of the symptoms but recognise that everyone is different.

Basically IBS is a name given to anything that is not working right in your digestive system from you mouth to your bum. It is not a name for a particular problem but a multitude of things that can go wrong with your digestive system. When they do the tests they are looking for specific problems. These include cancer, chron's disease, colitis and celiac disease. Anything else is lobbed into the IBS basket.
From what you have said about the proctogram, I would think someone would be discussing surgery with you. Are you supposed to be seeing your doctor about this?!
I am on the waiting list to see a colorectal surgeon but that could take up to a year. The consultant I saw who diagnosed ibs seemed to dismiss the intusseption and when I told him about waiting to see the colorectal surgeon he said that he was going to recommend that under no circumstance should they touch it as it would make things worse. I really am at a loss what to believe anymore. I know that taking oramorph every day isn’t good but it’s the only thing that takes the pain away.
These could be the cause of your ibs I would get another appointment and ask them if they are the cause of your pain they should know !! X
I agree with Pansy2 - get another appointment or a second opinion.
The only problem is I’ve had every test going & nothing has shown apart from the defecating proctogram (intusseption) & the capsule endoscopy. (Markers all left in small bowel) I have been diagnosed with everything from depression to constipation to pyschosemetic pain. The professor I saw is a leading expert in ibs & he seemed certain that this is what is causing the pain. Has anybody tried gut based hypnotherapy? I have been listening to a podcast & this seems interesting.
Did you see my reply on Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism that I wrote to Agonyibs. I know that IBS can cause discomfort and distress; but I think if you read my reply and realise that you have a life besides your IBS; try to remember that. I know when I am doing my Buddhist practice I feel physically and mentally better.
I have IBS and taking laxatives because of constipation. Eating more healthy. But what helps me is my Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist practice, the doctrine is The Lotus Sutra, English translation by Burton Watson. The chant is Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. This practice helps me deal with my negativity because it is not outside of myself; and I need to prolong my life for this practice.
I believe that IBS is caused by a change to the gut microbiome. If you can do it and as you suffer from constipation rather than diarrhoea, eat a varied diet with lots of green leaf foods. Eat meat and fish too but keep your diet fat free. Don't eat processed foods such as bacon or smoked fish or ready meals and take aways. No alcohol. It's all about getting the right good gut bacteria into the bowel plus the roughage will be good for clearing the constipation. You can look up on line the right foods to eat.Medications and antibiotics and acid reducing medications can cause gut bacteria changes.
If you suffered from IBS with diarrhea I would not suggest this. I would recommend the Fodmap diet and an exclusion of milk and yeast. Good luck.
I’ve had a colonoscopy & they did say they had found diverticular but it was on the right side & they didn’t seem concerned about it .
Forgot to say ask to be referred to gynae regarding your bladder and rectal prolapse pelvic floor exercises could help too try movicol or a stool softener for the constipation as being constipated could make the prolapse worse don’t be fobbed off this is causing you pain keep going keep pestering your doctor x
All the markers still in the small bowel does make me think that there is a kind of intermittent partial blockage of the colon. Did they discuss the possibility of a recurrent twisting (descending) colon? I am waiting for the appointment with a surgeon (early August) to discuss the possibility of a mobile cecum (syndrome), that's the right side of the (ascending) colon.
Hi Agonyibs,
I have not undergone any of the procedures that you have so I don’t know if this is of any use to you but I have had IBS for many decades and in 2007 started getting pain in the lower left hand side of my bowel. It got so bad I was hospitalised and they diagnosed me with Diverticulitis. Did any of their tests look for this at all?
