Does anyone have constant diarrhoea. I’m getting it every two or three days. I take loperamide when I get the diarrhoea but was wondering if I should take one every morning to try to prevent it

Hi Squidge

I have IBS and was having a lot of diarrhoea. I had all the usual bloods and poo samples tested, but everything came back normal. My GP sent a referral for me to have a colonoscopy in case of colitis or Crohns. The bowel specialist rang me to say look at my diet first and to cut out garlic, onions, salad greens and green leafed vegetables which I am doing. I had had bad diarrhoea after eating salad greens, but didn’t think it could be the cause, but now I’m wondering if it was. Sorry for the long message and if you’ve already cut it these foods. Good luck x

I do try but at the moment anything can trigger it. It’s such an awful disease and comes on so suddenly. Doctor keeps prescribing loperamide so I suppose it’s safe

It is safe. The consultant said it was ok for me to take it if I had a ‘runny’ spell!

Thanks for your help

Look at the low FODMAP diet. It really helps you find out which sugars you are sensitive to. Get the App from Monash University, it is great.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I had a phone call from the bowel specialist at my local hospital saying I didn’t need a colonoscopy, but to look at my diet. He recommended cutting out onion, garlic, leafy greens and salads for a month and see what happened. Then do the same with dairy then gluten. He mentioned the FODMAP diet and is referring me to someone within the NHS to advise.

You may have to wait for a while. If you want to do some research on thdiet look at the Monash University site and download the app. It tells you how much of each sugar is in each food, using an easy to follow traffic light system. When I saw a dietitian she put me on FODMAP elimination diet and all my symptoms went in a few days.. Then, after a month you start introducing each sugar one at a time to see how they affect you. Seriously the app has so much info. It's no good doing a bit of this and a bit of that. I think it can be totally managed by diet, this is relatively new research--medication used to be the only way.

I did last year after antibiotics and also EVERYTIME Im nervous... Do you know your triggers? I took imodium about once a week as it lasted me a good 3-4 days everytime, if youre literally getting it everyday definitely consult a doc or take it

I suffered from diarrhoea at least once a week, I then started a FODMAP diet, cut out onions, garlic, etc, I also switched to almond milk and most significantly, I cut out wheat and started to eat gluten free food., helped massively with me.

Thing is I can literally eat wheat and gluten and mostly be ok. Im not even constipated most days but get lots of spasms (not cramps). I might try almond milk

Look at the app and sort out your trigger sugars, it really does work!

I went gluten free for 6 months but it didn’t make any difference to me. I don’t drink milk of any sort

The low fodmap diet fixed mine :)

Exactly!! It is brilliant and not a diet, it just gives you knowledge of which sugars you can tolerate

I also have IBS D. Very severe. Went lactaid free. Trying low FODMAP. Really believe I have a wheat intolerance. Even the smallest amount sets off diarrhea for days! Then I have to take Imodium and start over.

Good luck and stay safe!

Yes I have the same thing! Diarrhoea almost every day for last year, started since having an horrendous double whammy parasitic infection and huge doses of antibiotics, never been the same since. Used to also have cramps, bloating and pain but this has improved hugely by doing the elimination diet and adding in foods one at a time. Silly thing is I still had diarrhoea when I cut out all food and just drank broth so sometimes the gut is just irritated and not only by foods. I found mine is made worse by gluten, wheat, corn, potatoes, caffeine, alcohol and fibre. Symptoms all a lot better except the diarrhoea! Hope you find some relief soon!
