Update on Ferrous Bisglycinate

A quick update on Ferrous Bisglycinate. Prior to this, I have only had success with Liquid Ferrous Sulfate. After trying all the other over counter medications, the doctor prescribed the Liquid. I got an immediate boost to my levels. A prescription is not necessary, but within 4 months I could see my ferritin rise. Since then, I have read reports where Liquid Ferrous Sulfate is considered the "Gold Standard" in iron supplements. Given my good fortune in finding LFS, why would I wan to change? LFS is messy, stains everything it touches, and not transportable.

I am pretty sure it was DicCarlson who recommended Ferrous Bisglycinate, I promised a report. I took 3 * 27mg of Ferrous Bisglycinate with vitamin c every night (most every night) for 4 months.

Before After

10/19/20 2/15/21

Iron 113 96

Saturation 46 43

Ferritin 302 314

My conclusion is, I am staying with 1 x 27mg Ferrous Bisglycinate every night. (For the next four months). I actually want to lower my ferritin to around 200. Ha!

So thanks to DicCarlson for the suggestion.

So, let me see if I follow you. The difference of benefit between the liquid ferrous sulfate and the capsules isn't much, according to your numbers, but what you like is the ease of taking the supplement. Am I correct?

Also, a greater benefit can be had by taking the supplement every other night instead of every night.

I agree with the first part. There does not seem to be much of a difference between the two as far as numbers.

As for the second part. I do think if a person is deficient in iron. If they take iron every day, they will absorb less of a percentage of iron each day, but the total amount of iron absorbed will be greater.

Say I only absorb 50% of 100mg the iron, if I take it every day that equal 100mg, every two days.

If I take it every other day, I absorb 80% of the iron I take. My absorption is greater, yep you are correct. But I only got 80mg.

This is greatly simplifying but I hope you get the point. The way it was explained to me is, the blackness I see in my stools is the iron that did not get absorbed. So I kind of used that as my guide. In the beginning I did 325mg of liquid Ferrous Sulfate twice a day, every day for about 3 months before I had any constipation issues. After that I was told to take 650mg once a day. That worked for a while then I got down to 325mg once a day.

Now it looks like I will be taking it every other day, because I don't think getting my ferritin above 250 has really helped much. Hope that makes sense.

But the main point: Liquid Ferrous Sulfate is difficult to take verses a pill is correct.

Can I ask something? Has the iron supplementation made a big difference to your RLS?

Correcting an iron deficiency can take time. So supplementing can take a couple months to get results. I got a wake up call with an infusion. That was better than any drug I have ever been given for my RLS. I think that the DA drugs (Dopamine Agonist) caused permanent damage. Still its about 80-90% better. Almost manageable. :-)
