Breakthrough on middle of the night walking!

I used to walk for 15 minutes when awakened by RLS. Then I learned that I could run in place for 11 minutes and would then be able to fall back asleep for at least a couple of hours. I now have discovered that in 1 minute I can solve the problem. What I do is raise the knee of my right leg up quickly as far as I can and then lower it down. I do this 30 times with my right leg and then repeat it 30 times with my left leg. That is all it takes for my RLS to subside for at least a couple of hours. Please let me know if this works for you.

Glad you have found a method...it all sounds quite precise

I’m definitely going to try this tonight as I suffer terribly with RLS!

Thanks for the tip.

Interesting! And glad this works for you. The faster the solutions the better. I usually walk downstairs, go to the loo, do some stretching of the calves, maybe shake the legs and then go up and to bed again. But then, my rls is quite well controlled with 10mg oxycodon, so only slight ‘inconveniences’ remain about 2-3x a week.

I used to take Oxy 10’s, but they don’t do anything for my RLS. I’m glad they work for you!!

Might try that.

20 per leg did not work but 30 does for me. Depending on how bad your RLS is maybe a larger or smaller number would be better.

Last night was a nightmare I couldn’t sleep, in and out of bed all night pacing as soon as I got back to bed my restless legs crept back. Unless you have this awful condition you would not understand how it changes your life. Yes I will definitely be trying your “method” no doubt tonight.

I’m on pramipeole known Parkinson drug, the relief is fantastic , have no side effects from it and can sleep, take 2 after lunch as I get it in the afternoon and 2 before bed.

Hi Boaty19, lots of us on here have taken pramipexole and have had miraculous relief....for a while.

They belong to a group of drugs called “dopamine agonists” and they often lead to a phenomenon called “augmentation” (see a pinned post about it on the main page) Augmentation sees decreased symptom control at night, symptoms starting earlier in the day and spreading to other areas of the body.

You seem to be taking quite a high dose already, don’t be tempted to take a higher dose. It’s also worth finding out exactly what your ferritin level is, we are looking for 100+

It’s such a relief to sleep BUT these drugs have a very big downside for lots of us eventually , read up about them and DON’T increase the dose.

Luckily my rls is fairly well controlled most of the time now, but when it was bad I found any exercise, such as squats, that tired the muscle until it ached helped.

I have found that it is stressing the muscle or the use of the muscle that makes a difference for me, which can be done without it being aroebic activity. I hold a squat position for as long as my calves can stand it.

I used to do 50-100 squats, it takes some time. So now I do one legged squats, inside a doorway to keep my balance. 10-20 such squats are enough and the whole exercise takes 1 minute. Also I just love my vibro plate machine, you stand on a plate with your knees bent and it changes unpleasant vibrations into pleasant within 3 minutes without your heart beating any faster. I will also try your method, thank you!
