PSP and blindness

My 74 year old husband has had PSP for several years and has suddenly lost his sight today. Is this normal for PSP?

Sorry to hear this - I've never heard of such a relation

I would suggest a checkup with an opthalmologist as soon as possible

My dad had some days when he had trouble reading. We were not sure if he had problems bringing his eyes to focus or if he had lost the ability to comprehend.

I’ve not heard of this happening before but I’d have it checked if you can. Is he able to tell you what he can or can’t see? People use the word ‘blind’ in many different ways. Most common with PSP is the inability to open the eyelids and difficulty coordinating eye movements. If it’s a sudden profound loss of all vision it might be something different. I would at least speak to your gp who could do a simple blood test to rule out things like giant cell arteritis. Is your husband mobile? If not there are domicilary optometrists who could come to your home to look in his eyes.

Wishing you strength with this awful disease.

Yes, this happens, as did to my wife. It is parts of the body closing down I'm afraid. She was an avid reader and this distressed her when unable to read. It is warning to others be prepared!

Hello,I think this happened to my Mum too. I'm not sure exactly to what extent but one day (before she lost her speech) whilst watching TV she said to me that she couldn't see it. However, some days would be better than others so I don't think she was completely blind. I've also read that some people here have problems with their tracking which must be very off-putting. All I can suggest is that you try to get access to an optometrist. They might not be able to help much but they may be able to point you in the right direction and at least be able to assess the general health of the eye and possibly rule out any other causes. Good luck. x

Many thanks to everyone who replied with their helpful suggestions. Am putting everything in action and will report back. Thanks again x
