Drinking enough in early pregnancy.

I’m currently 12 weeks pregnant with my second and I feel constantly nauseous. I’m really struggling to take on enough fluid as nothing is appealing to me….the thought of drinking makes me feel sick. I’m usually really good with my water intake but water is unbearable and any juice/cordial I really have to psych myself up for. I just want something nice and refreshing 🙈

Does anyone have any suggestions of something that will help hydrate me without making me feel awful?

Hi! I am sorry you are struggling with the nausea. Definitely something I don't miss from the first trimester! Perhaps worth trying ginger or peppermint tea to see if you tolerate these better? Generally, I found anti-sickness wristbands were somewhat helpful. I hope you feel better soon!

I had HG in both my pregnancies. The only thing that really helped was anti sickness medication. I used ondasteron which is safe from 8 weeks. I tended to find fizzy drinks were better than water, I couldn't stand water in my second pregnancy. It also had to be really cold with ice in it. Fanta was the main thing I drank. I also ate ice lollies, solero ones mainly and sucked on lots of fruity sweets as this helped keep the sickness at bay and provided some hydration. Hopefully it eases soon as it is so awful feeling so sick all the time x

Fizzy drinks or fizzy water, were all I could drink and craved. I really liked the Tango dark fruit. It's a bit like fizzy Ribena.I'm my first pregnancy I also loved strawberry or Raspberry milkshake, if you're struggling to get your calorie intake you could try a protein shake maybe?

Good luck and hope you're feeling better soon x

I found that 1/3 cup of pure orange juice with 2/3 fizzy water was super refreshing! You could try with other fresh juices. Obviously a bit healthier than the usual fizzy drinks xx

I’m also 12 weeks and having a similar experience. I’m really thirsty but nothing is appealing to me and I struggle with water, which is usually the only thing I drink.

I’m finding orange juice and lemonade refreshing but obviously that contains a lot of sugar. Coconut water is another one that I can manage and helps quench my thirst. This week I’ve been drinking iced (decaf) coffee, with lots of milk and I add a bit of extra water to it.

Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy.

Not the kind of answer you've asked, but this leaflet by a doctor of Ecological Medicine talks about how you might be able to improve your condition with supplements:drjerrythompson.co.uk/leafl...

I really struggled with liquids making me nauseous too. I found I could suck on ice cubes without getting sick (or loudly crunch on them much to my partners disgust 😂) so got most of my fluids that way. Also upped my watery food intake - melon, cucumber etc

I am sorry for you struggles, Parkerdown. If it will make you feel any better, I am in the same boat, 10 weeks pregnant and I really am fed up with that constant nausea, and nothing really helps. Also I often find myself dehydrated by the end of the day, because I don’t like water anymore, but the night is worst on those cases, because I constantly wake up for toilet and because of my dry lips and throat.

What helps so far is freshly squeezed lemon juice with ice, honey and water, proportion to your taste. Let me know if it works for you.

Argh terrible isn't it - I was the same just the thought of water was unbearable... fresh bottled apple juice + sparkling water + ice got me through the first trimester! As others have said already, in general fizzy water & ice made a lot of difference.
