Hi all,

I have had to call into work due to how low my immune system is and my boss mentioned speaking about my absence’s.

Are you covered due to being pregnant ?

Thank you

Hi there sorry to hear of your sickness I too have had some time of in my pregnancy so by law you can not be discriminated against sickness in pregnancy. As long as you state you were sick due pregnancy etc you will be fine. Hope it helps

So any pregnancy related illness is protected and shouldn’t be counted towards your absence record, although colds, flus and viruses arent pregnancy related illnesses. You could speak to your employer to say that it’s because of your pregnancy you’re picking these illnesses up (if your sickness record was good prior to you being pregnant) , you might need to get support from your midwife or doctor though.

If you have a pregnancy related illness within 4 weeks of your due date then your maternity starts automatically.

I hope you feel better soon, and that your employer offers you the support and flexibility you need x

Hey thanks for your reply

I work in a GP surgery as admin/receptionist.

I was poorly prior to knowing I was pregnant but once I found out it all made sense why I was feeling that way.

I had a sickness bug and is now taking me a lot longer to recover from due to being pregnant and having low iron etc.

the manager mentioned when I called in that we need to discuss my absence so not sure what she meant by this - don’t know if I should just get a sick note from gp to state pregnancy related. - it’s not nice that they add on all this stress to the pregnancy.

Thanks for your reply x

bless you, it’s hard enough on your body creating life let along trying to do it this time of year when so many viruses are going around.

Just make sure they’re doing everything they should be their end as well like risk assessments etc. do you have a pregnancy worker policy? Maybe read through that and make yourself aware of what should be happening.

Hopefully it will be a supporting meeting to see what they can offer you to make things easier rather than making you worry about being in trouble for any absences you may have.

Good luck! X

Did they carry out a health and safety assessment? In my one they were pro working from home if that is an option for you and going into the office if really necessary. If you’ve not had one, I would contact HR for one. Hope you feel better soon x

Legally once you tell your employer that you are pregnant that should carry one out. In my one they considered my exposure to infections etc and I would hope that they do the same for you. If you’re getting grief from your manager then you should get a note from the doctor. Though again legally you can’t be discriminated against because you are pregnant. Let me know how you get on x
