Minor dental surgery & prednisolone

Hi,

Next month I am due to have a tooth stump removed which will probably entail cutting the gum….🥴…..I’m currently on 2.5mg Prednisolone a day. Do you think I should alter my dosage before or after the procedure please?

Thanks.

I'm assuming your dentist knows your medical history?? If not he should be made aware. The procedure may count as minor gum surgery; there is a lot of information in 'Related Posts' at the right of your screen which may help you. I hope all goes well for you.

If it was me, I’d see how I felt rather than fearing the worst but I know others would rather take a couple of mg just in case. Usually it’s the thought that’s the worst bit. How are you coping on 2.5mg?

Mostly coping well thanks & if I overdo things, I don’t suffer the PMR aches & pains, just severe tiredness, so I take an extra 1mg on those days.

I recently had a root abscess incised on two separate occasions in advance of either a root canal procedure or a tooth extraction. I did not need extra Prednisalone.

Are you taking AA? If so you need to tell your Dentist.

Lyn - you need to mention it now - not on the day as you may need to have this done at the Dental Department at the Hospital - how long were you on AA?

I’ve been referred by my normal dentist to a dental surgeon…above his pay grade I guess! So similar to hospital dental dept. But I will call them in advance thanks. I was on AA for 2 & a half years.

Hi LyndakiFunnily I had the same procedure done a week ago. I'm on 7mg and everything went fine without no problems at all, except for the soreness of the gum. I didn't take any extra doses. Presumably your dentist is aware you take pred? A week on and everything has settled down fine. Best of luck !!
