After being diagnosed a year ago with PBC my consultant has just put me on Ursodeoxycholic, my concern is I take thyroxine, ramipril, atorvastatin, naproxen which I have limited to 2/3 week and also lanzoprazole. Any advice is welcome please.

Hi I also take Ursodeoxycholic and thyroxine lanzoprazole

Hello Margaret59.

Some medications can sort of clash with ursodeoxycholic acid ('urso' for short seems the terminology everyone is using) but a case of reading the Patient Info Leaflet (PIL) it does give an insight into them and how to space certain meds out. Usually your doctor would be aware of other meds and from what I have read on here over a few years it seems other meds appear to be taken alongside urso.

I have never seen urso as a medication as such, more of a supplement as basically we are adding a bile component that we have naturally to our system to improve a compromised biliary system. (I see thyroxine as an addition to the system too.)

I did read that urso is 'well tolerated' and for me I just had a few mild side-effects on starting back in Dec 2010. These vanished within a couple months. I've not really had any problems taking urso but I'm not on

any other medications, nor have I been just prior and since starting it.

I have naproxen & omrprozal with urso & they're OK. Drs normally check your existing meds prior to prescribing so you should be fine. X

I take tetracycline, progesterone and 2000 mg of urso. My gastro knows my meds I'm on and seems ok. I make sure I take urso with meals. 1000 at breakfast another 1000 at supper. I wondered why such a high dose unless he's trying to bring my enzymes down fast. According to my weight I shoukd only be taking roughly 900 mg. So technically I'm taking over double dose.

I feel ok other than the itch which seemed to subside but lately coming back. And not just my arms any more. My back and sometimes legs.

Don't see the gastro for another 2 weeks but will be sure to get my blood test results over the past few months to see if the urso has lowered the enzymes .

Thanks it's just a bit worrying when on other meds, I'm on 500 in the morning and 500 in the evening, not seeing my consultant until March.
