Hi Shirley,

I suppose it depends who you go there to see; if its a nurse then probably not. If it is a consultant or anaesthetist, however, they are often in a better position to amend or make recommendations for medication; they then normaly send a letter along with yoy for your GP.

For me they looked at everything I was on, asked me many questions and came back with changes on current doses, removal of 1 med and 2 additional and I took a letter of explanation to my GP - it wad one reason I went to see them.

I think its best to give them a call and ask maybe before attending.

I have been to the Pain Clinic several times, have had gabapentin, amitryptiline, codeine - prescribed separately at each visit, none actually helped :(

Hello

If you are sent to a pain clinic you go their on the understanding that will be seen on as a lone patient with possibly a carer, The doctor and nurse specialist will interview you too see if you a suitable candidate for the techniques that they will show you,in class they will also at that time if you will need referal into further departments for treatments in the future or now.

You will then be offered courses in the clinic or other departments, medications will be initiated then and a prescriptions will be issued at that time as required, sometimes your doctor may be sent a letter telling what they want too do with you, most hospitals have a chemist although you can in cases use boots or similair, you will learn how to take your meds

and any tools needed by you It can take a while to get the dose right also the type of medication, things do not happen that quickly the initial course will last six weeks at an appointment once a week. they will be in a class of other patients

Do not feel self concience with regards to things you will learn, In most cases you can ask for a copy of the letter sent to your doctor, this will help for you too talk to your GP regarding clinic

All the best

Thank you all for your answers they have answered my question...

My pain clinic writes to my GP and asks them to prescribe certain medicines. The GP was once a bit reluctant to prescribe one particular drug but he did so after I asked him to. I think it may be cost orientated!
