3rd vaccine for covid

I had my 3rd vaccine yesterday, another dose of Pfizer. The nurse said that locally it had been decided to use Pfizer for all 3rd doses whatever you had had previously. She also confirmed that we would be called for a booster dose in 6 months time.

Glad to say other than a sore arm, headache and a procession of hot sweats I seem to have fewer side effects this time round. Keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way!!

I live in Wolverhampton. Our GP is super efficient, they were really quick off the mark with 1st jabs too, particularly for CEV. The lead partner at the surgery also leads a local network of GP practices and I met folk from at least 2 other surgeries in that network. I know that the BUS commissioning group in the city had already identified the severely immuno suppressed who needed the 3rd vaccines which no doubt speeded up the process, I had received a letter from the CCG offering vaccination to any one over 12 who lived in my house because of my immune status.

Gosh you’re well ahead of the game getting it already! Good for you.My Rheumy is waiting for advice from the BSR about the ideal time for me to get it as I’m on Rituximab.

Hope you get it asap, the rituximab makes it more complicated I believe. I take abatacept which is a T cell inhibitor.

Hi, that’s great you’ve got it so soon. I’m also on Abatacept, did you have to stop treatment before/after the 3rd jab? Not heard a thing in my area (Kent)

I failed miserably to get advice from the rheumy team, it's almost impossible to get through of late, but I had read some research from a reputable American institute advising missing 1 dose before and 1 after so that's what I'm doing in the hope of giving the vaccine chance to work. I did talk it through with my son who is a doctor and he thought it sounded like a reasonable approach. I hope you get your vaccine soon.

Gosh it’s bad we are having to figure it out for ourselves! Thank you and hope the side effects are ok and the lack of biologic doesn’t cause any problems x

Thanks. Today had been a bit headache and nausea, but just developing a mouth ulcer which was a huge problem after my 2nd vaccination, I had repeated crops of 3or 4at a time for about 4 months and ended up with steroid mouthwash from the GP 3 times and an oral steroid spray to use when they begin which was effective so I'm going to resume the spray.

Following the BSR guidelines my PCT has postponed the RTX they'd booked and arranged a 3rd vaccine for next week. It's actually only 4.5 months after my 2nd vaccination, which I find a bit concerning. They say I can have RTX 3 weeks after that.

This is all so new - nobody really knows. I thought the 3rd vaccine was meant to be 6 months after the 2nd. The situation with RTX specifically is worrying. I'm not sure how it works when you have a vaccination that triggers a response in the same cells as you try to wipe out a short time later. Or vice versa….

Lolabridge profile image
Lolabridge in reply toStormySeas

They probably don’t want you to have to wait too long for your RTX so are giving you the third jab a little sooner.

I think you’re right, it’s just the science is all so new there’s no knowing if it’s the right thing to do. Time will tell…

It's confusing on so many levels. It is all very new but I think the decision makers are doing there best responding to evidence based research as best they can.

StormySeas profile image

Yes, I agree. I have no problem with this, it’s just in an ideal world there’d be a lot more evidence on which to base decisions.

Thanks. I seem to have escaped the worst this time though it's triggered mouth ulcers again.

Gosh brilliant! Made up for you.I stupidly had a private anti body test done and my results are very very low at 0.8 so I've been asking and asking my GP s they were really slow last time and looks the same again. Hope the side effects dissolve soon. Xxx

When was months ago was your second vaccine. In the US, the FDA can't make up their minds on boosters and how long to wait after your last vaccine.

rounder profile image

I had my first vaccination in January and second in March. This was a third to be followed by a booster in six months. Here in the UK the government have decided to give a third primary vaccine to people classified as severely immuno suppressed and some of the RA meds drop us into that category. For people over forty booster jabs are due to start soon, maybe early October.

That sounds so good what an on the ball GP practice. Hope your side effects are minimal.Do you know if the third vaccine can be given at any time or do we need to wait 6 months from the second vaccine?

I'm not sure if the 6 months wait is just for the booster.

My GP surgery have no info regarding third vaccines and said I was to wait to hear from the NHS.

rounder profile image

The 6 months was quoted for the follow up booster after the 3rd vaccines. Sorry but I don't know about time intervals between 2nd and 3rd. I hope your surgery sorts you out soon. It's frustrating that we all have such different was when we need the same support.

rounder profile image
rounder in reply toChrissycl

My own GP arranged the appointment as they are lead surgery in a group of practises that have been giving the vaccines.

I had my booster vaccine two days ago as well as my flu I won’t let them give it to me again in a double dose as I had hardly any side effects on my Covid vaccines except for a headache with the first one but having the two together has been a nightmare I’ve had nausea pain in my arm (both jabs were in the same arm) really badly which has spread up into my face and ear and feeling very hot in my face I checked for a temperature but it is ok I’m glad I am retired as I wouldn’t want to go to work feeling like this so maybe some of you might like to ask you dr to doo the vaccine a week or two apart keep safe everyone
