Perhaps unusual for Rumy Forum, but I am having difficulty in putting my compression stockings on as it starts off my RA in my hands and wrists, just wondering if anyone can recommend an appliance to help and have had experience with it.
Compression Stockings: Perhaps unusual for Rumy Forum... - NRAS
Compression Stockings
You can get slippery "under sleeves" that mean compression stockings are easier to slide on....then you just pull the under sleeve out. I had Lymphodaema in my arm & with RA found it difficult to pull the sleeve on, I can't remember exactly how it worked as it was years ago......ask your physio....or even a pharmacist may have a catalogue for this sort of thing.
You can get a device that you put your socks on and then you push your feet into them darling.xxx
Ive got one of those...its called a Soxon. Got it from the Physio. A clever device but it still requires a degree of strength in your hands/wrists/forearms. Still a boon though as it means you dont have to reach your toes with your fingers, which was the hardest part for me.
There are aids out there need to speak with your practice nurse
If the compression stockings are open toe you could use a plastic bag over your foot and slip your stocking over your heels and pull the plastic bag off if you are able to.
I used to work as a dristrict nurse and we did this all the time I had trouble with putting them on for other people. I had trouble with my hands in those days before RA made an appearance.
Good luck hope this works for you.
Hi Matilda.....Now they have a slippery very fine (coated to slide) plastic tube open at both ends with a loop at the had/foot end, & as you say you can slide a sleeve or stocking over that slippery plastic ...then grab the loop & slide it off once the stocking/sleeve is in position. The arm one is very long so you don't have to be too accurate if it wrinkles up.
I tried using the plastic bag trick before the Lymphodaema nurse told me about the sleeve ......but I found the bag tore & I had to start again.....or leave haf the bag under the sleeve & get a very damp arm!
Hope you get the picture...it's difficult to describe.
There are literally dozens of things to help put compression stockings on the reality is you probably will need to buy on of the slides and or a sock thing and find one that works for you. The reality is a slightly different design from a different company may work better for you
