I have had RA all my life. I have been on Tramadol and Naproxen for years and my pain never really goes away. Does anyone know of any other medication apart from Tramadol cause I don't seem to be reacting to it any more. Also, from experience, I know exercise helps and depression will creep up due to the pain so we need to be very aware of our moods. Reduced capacity is horrible but sometimes all I could do is just push myself to do things I did not feel like doing so I would not get myself into a 'helpless' situation.
Lots of love to all who are coping with this dreadful illness and I would be grateful for any suggestions with regards to pain medication.

Sorry to hear that your pain meds are no longer doing the job.
I too took tramadol fir years and like you, at the end, it barely ever even took the edge of things. Initially, to give it a boost, I alternated between periods of tramadol, then dehydraxideine. Eventually, that too stopped working so I currently take ( amongst lots of other stuff), oxynorm. Thankfully, that seems to be holding me at the minute.
I think the best thing you can do is discuss it with your GP. In my experience , the GP is better than consultant with regards to pain control.
I'm on ibuprofen (naproxen doesn't do a thing for me) and codeine for pain but another weapon in my arsenal is citalopram. I am not sure whether it helps with the pain itself or whether it helps me cope with the pain but it has definitely lifted my spirits.
I will have to go see my GP again. The first time I went he was worried about his government imposed suggestions about painkillers more than my pain. I have found this to be the case often in the UK. The fact that I have been on tramadol (100 per month) for years now should indicate that I need a change. anyhow I will try again and if need be see a specialist, I presume they will have to do something about it. Right now I don't like doctors very musch so I will give it a week
