Hi guys and gals, I have stage 3 kidney disease and was wondering if anybody could recommend resources on kidney friendly meals or diet plans. Whether it's Books, websites, videos everything that people have found helpful I'd really appreciate it. If this has already been discussed in another post could you signpost me to it please.

Thanks.

My Doctor prescribed a CKD diet based on results of bloodwork for protein, potassium, sodium, and phosphorus. Davita has much information on CKD diet. Best to check with Doctor on a CKD diet, how much of these items need to reduce.

hi there. I also have 3b stage. However my labs are all normal in terms of potassium phosphate and protein. I don’t have diabetes nor heart disease. My condition is bc of to many NSAIDs, not being consistent with my blood pressure meds and not drinking enough water and I might add a high stress job was diagnosed at 3b and had no clue what it meant how I could have gotten it. Every year for my annual exams the dr said I was doing well . I be exercised regularly maintained a 22bmi. I never analyzed my lab reports bc th dr said no worries In the meantime I had a BIL who was in stage 5 and dialysis 3x a wk forb9 yrs the toll it took on him and my sister was astonishing, and agonizing they had no life but going to dialysis.

Continuing……so when I got my diagnosis from a new Dr ha was surprised I had not been sent to a nephrologist or received counseling. I was able to get an appointment with the best in town within 3 mos. The neph sent me to a renal nutrition class told me not to eat meat and basically do plant based meals. But could not give a reference so I’m on my own I kooked up da vita I keep on asking if someone would rework some of my recipes. Apparently until you near stage 5 you don’t get a dietitian. I went on the kidney school.org and the had a starting point. I want to keep my law normal but it is the hardest time to do on your own.on top of CKD I hav IBS. So I get so frustrated eating chicken and fish w rice or eatting stean in bag veggies w rice. I have become full of anxiety around..

I went for my 3 month visit last week and my labs were much better, creatinine down, GFR up to 38 from 31. I have been eating 4-6oz protein a day and he tells me to lower protein and not eat shrimp….watch my intake. I’m so frustrated because I want to find a nutritionist that we use my labs to create menus. And not just give some form diet.

if you have problems with thec3P’s then seek out an expert otherwise like me I see my labs eat to them and hope to find a nutritionist.

This stage of the CKD process is frustrating because it’s food. We eat by ourselves, we eat socially, friends have us over for dinner, we go to brunch w friends. It’s an exhausting time

I hope you find a dietitian. If I find one I’ll let you know

You may find the resources you list via Google etc but none will be personalised for you, as they must be for best effect.

For that reason, I dont generally offer details of my mum's Nutritional Therapy protocol (stage 3, she almost doubled her eGFR in ~5y). But I can send lists of qualified Nutritional Therapists from which to select one, if you wish.

Hi, yes diet is the key. You need to find a renal dietician who can help you create diet based on your labs and your preferences.

I was able to work virtually with a dietician through Strive, a kidney support group. Check with your insurance to find your coverage options.

I would send her recipies that i thouggt i could make in blk and freeze individual portions. She would look over, and tweak tge recipes. She could also recommend specific bands such as nut milks, because some brands are higher in phosphorus.

I bought and returned many "kidney" cookbooks, they has just been thrown together.

Davita is good,

These recipie will appeal to those wanting comfort food and are easy to change. I make the meatloaf with turkey, add lots of shredded carrots and diced apples and fennel seeds. Aroma thetaphy. To make freezing individual meals easier to freeze i make in muffin tons.

Just remember to eat based on YOUR labs and YOUR medical conditions. You'll find all kinds of renal diets and get all kinds of advice, but a lot of these wouldn't be appropriate for your situation. Best to consult with a renal dietitian. Otherwise. It can get confusing pit there

Check out Kidneyhood.Org, Lee Hull's site. They recommend a Mediterranean diet, basically, but with slightly less protein. They've had good results with raising eGFR and lowering Creatinine and BUN. If you have access to your blood test reports, check your potassium and phosphorous as these may or may not be high with CKD- they have diet recommendations if they are high. They also offer a non-nitrogen protein analog that doesn't harm kidneys (as much?), but it is pretty expensive.

Not what you're looking for?
