Probiotics anyone?

I have been taking probiotics for the last 3.5 years and seriously I cannot see any benefit as a supplement to daily 500mg hydroxy. I still have a permanent tummy bloat (along with some stubborn weight!)

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who is taking this supplement. I may trail a month without them and see what does or does not happen??

Hello

On a quick trawl I see several reports ofit being advisable to take probiotics when imbibing Hydroxycarbamide. I take HU and I am also Coeliac and have Pancreatic Enzymes to aid my gut but but recently added high level probiotics. This regime has undoubtedly been helping. Fortunately I have never suffered with stomach pain or bloat but other symptoms (explosive diaorrhea and excessive flatulence) have abated.

A trial cessation of the probiotics could be interesting - as could exploring a higher dose and asking for your pancreas function to be assessed. .... Interesting times ahead!!!!

I also take probiotics… and I too sometimes question if they’re of any real benefit. Haven’t been game enough to stop taking them.. so would be interested to see how you go. I’ve been on 1000mg of Hydrea daily since July 2023 and have also experienced bloating and abdominal discomfort plus that dreaded weight gain . I also have experienced increased joint and muscle pain ..

I take Symprove for the gut .Been taking now for 4 months started after stopping HU and starting interferon,it has reduced the uncomfortable bloat and upset stomach. Currently changing my diet to try and get some weight loss.

very quickly - please seek the advice and help of a functional medical practitioner. Far more useful for gut and tummy related stuff than conventional medics. There’ll be lots in Oz. Just Google it. Louise UK - you need decent probiotics which hit the gut alive and running not rubbish off the shelf stuff.

Have you been taking same ones. ? Best to have different strains after a few months.I've taken at various times ,

At present eat Kefir , saukraut and Kimchi and drink kombucha. ( with breaks )

Has bloating only started after taking hydroxicarbamide?

As Louprv said consulting Functional practioner would be very helpful . And the cheap probiotics useless .

Good luck

Many thanks for your comments. The community here is always ready to pass on good advice. I will talk to my GP first as I see him more often than the haemo. The shelf-line probiotics are of no benefit so I will quit these . Maybe the bloat is related to these and not the 500mg hydroxy?? I started both around the same time.

In the meantime and until I get professional guidance from my GP and specialist, I will resort to just the kefir, which I do enjoy.

Hi

I have just started seeking health histermine x probiotic and it is definitely making a difference to me - unfortunately I’m getting reactions to certain foods at the moment so giving my gut a rest and on a low histermine diet to see if helps - all these things take time and advised up to 3 months to start working - also organic aloe Vera juice and apple cider vinegar and ginger homemade shot in a morning can help too - I just soak ginger root in boiling water and then drain and add the apple cider vinegar with a bit of Manuka honey to sweeten to start the day and all natural and good for your gut
