Hello 🤗 I have recently joined this group after a diagnosis of SLE. I was wondering if anyone had any information or recommendations for which supplements are best to take? Thank you 👍🏻
The best supplements? : Hello 🤗 I have recently... - LUPUS UK
The best supplements?
Personally I think diet is more if a priority than supplements, but as a general rule, I take salmon oil, vitamin D, zinc and biotin and a B12 spray.
My diet has the biggest impact on my SLE.
Thank you for your reply, it really is a great help as I am feeling very unwell and completely clueless. What sort of diet do you follow?
I eat a clean anti inflammatory diet.
I have a low sugar intake, and by low sugar I mean I don't eat any sweets or deserts, I also watch fruit and some veg because they can be high is sugars. I do this especially because I am on steroids.
I avoid gluten as much as possible.
Garlic will make me bedridden for weeks. .
Alcohol will turn my joints into burning hot hinges of doom.
I avoid processed food as much as possible and cook all of my own food. Batch cooking is a good plan.
I drink green tea, (decafinated), I have two large cups of green tea a day and really notice it if I don't. If you're not keen on the taste then ass a dash of lemon.
I avoid cows milk as I became allergic overnight.
I usually avoid caffeine at all costs but allow myself one coffee in the morning because I find it has helped pain since covid.
My muscle strength is poor so I eat a high protein low carb diet with plenty of fresh salad. I like veg but washing the pans in a pain.
If you eat red meat then follow it up by some vitamin C as it helps iron absorption.
Most of my diet is influenced from thailand, India or Bangladesh. I would describe myself as white British but found that eating a more eastern diet was better for me. It was great to learn about the benefits of different herbs and spices etc. I learnt the recipes in lockdown. Some were very hot and miss but I enjoyed doing it and noticed a big difference.
It's about what works for you and it's taken me a good ten year to learn all this and I'm sure there is more to learn.
Good luck.
Oh, I also limit nightshade veg too.
The latest hype/fashion according to newspaper adverts/articles seems to be Curcumin/TURMERIC yellow spice powder in tablets or capsules, a potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti cancer supplement made absorbable or more bioavailable through safe additives.
Sporty types swear by them for joint/muscle pain and stiffness …🤣🧐
Very expensive though but dirt cheap in Indian spice shops for culinary purposes!🤣
❤️ nuts! Walnuts!👍👏 ❤️Brazil nuts.Most nuts.
Brazil nuts hugely rich in Selenium! Good for the immune system and has antioxidant effect, promotes cell repair. Apparently helps with brain fog??
I know omega 3 fish oil is recommended for lupus - I'm not very good at taking it, though, as tends to make me feel sick! I've found N-Acetyl Cysteine helps, 2 x 600mg on an empty stomach. Also 600mg Magnesium, high-strength B vitamins, vitamin C, and a good multi. I find histamine in food is a problem for me, and taking DAO supplement really helps with that. I also avoid gluten and yeasts.
