Well I thought nothing could be worse to experience than 2020. How wrong was I ☹️

I am 4 weeks post ostomy operation, after my hubby found me unconscious on bathroom floor. After a vast number of doctors and medics battled to keep me alive after crashing more than once, I was transferred to hospital via helicopter. After an 8 hour surgery which I was not expected to survive I had most of my colon and bowel removed 🥲

After ICU then HDU I was transferred to normal ward. I was doing remarkably well until I got a water infection, my temperature became extremely unstable as did my blood pressure. My magnesium, and potassium levels dropped so low. I was vomiting and declined for 10 days.

I am extremely lucky and so very grateful to be alive 😄

I have a telephone consultation with my rheumatologist on 6/7 but I would like to know if anyone can help me.

Can LUPUS attack the colon and bowel.

My surgeon has put a diagnosis of eschemic colitis but said as to what the initial start was he is unsure.

Hope you are all as well as can be.

I probably won’t answer all your messages as I’m mentally and physically exhausted and trying to get as much rest as poss. 💐

Oh Bronn you poor angel .. I was so shocked to read your post . You truly are a survivor and you must have 9 lives like the 🐈‍⬛.Please don’t use energy to reply . Sending you so much love and hugs .

I wouldn’t know about lupus and the bowel but I’d take a bet that other autoimmune diseases will affect bowel . Endometriosis is one for sure.

Lucky lucky lady! Hope it all improves soon

Yes - lupus can affect pretty much anywhere in the body

lupus.org/resources/how-lup...

is a basic outline.

How badly an organ is involved will depend on how quickly something progresses and it sounds as if it was aiming for a speed record with you. Inflammation to peritonitis to perforation to life threatening status can be pretty speedy if you don't register the pain in the first place. Once a small area of gut wall (or any part of the body) is starved of oxygen and necrosis sets in in more than a critical number of cells, it can tip over an edge and go into free-fall. It was OH's field of research at one time, even working on development of ostomy closures and I did know a bit more about it 20 years ago!

Just found this too

- potentially worse than you but recognised in time to stop it getting to the stage yours did.

If you had as ischemic bowel it would indicate that something was stopping the blood getting to your colon in order to oxygenate it. Ischemic bowel is usually down to a mass (which would have been seen in surgery), or a blood clot.

Have you had blood clots before or suffer with APS?

Hi Bronn, I’m so sorry you have had such a bad time. My thoughts are the same as happytulip that it might have been a clot which might have been caused by APS. APS is another autoimmune disease which lupus patients often have as well as lupus. It cause blood to clot easily. There are 3 blood tests they can do to see if you have it. I hope you are resting well and getting stronger every day xx
