I have had a severe bout of Rosacea with huge pustules etc and its come at the same time as a severe Lupus flare (worse one since relapse in Feb 17) It is spreading fast and none of the topical creams are working - Is it OK to take Doxy with Lupus?
I have contacted Dr Lanham but need to get this under wraps quickly
I am sure it is Rosacea but its difficult as I also get Discoid Lupus - Very distressing as skin has been flawless since 2015 and now this

Doxy is contraindicated in patients with SLE as it can cause flares as can other antibiotics such as trimethoprim. However the prescribing doctor should know this and discuss it with you. Its about benefit vs cost. Some antibiotics aren't contraindicated yet can still trigger a flare. For example, there is nothing in any literature to say that co-amoxiclav causes a flare but it always does with me and I feel terrible on it. But I have to weigh up the cost of a flare over thr benefit of treating an infection.
I suggest you get some advice from whoever prescribed the doxy because many doctors don't know what you can and can't take with Lupus.
But, as happytulip says, we’re all different, eg i thrive on a constant daily dose of coamoxiclav for my IgG,A,M deficiency...and i do ok so far on topicals with sulfa in them...but i react badly to all the sulfa antibiotics i’ve been put on. I’ve not tried doxycycline yet..and i can’t find it on these lists of sulfanomides, but i’ve heard of other lupus patients badly reacting to doxycycline, so i’m not keen to be on it ever!
Hi I get rosacea and I keep a supply of lymocyclin, it does make me flare a bit so I take it for the shortest possible time to get the rosacea under comtrol.
Contacted Dermatologist and Dr Lanham @ London Bridge Lupus Centre and was told to start Doxycycline 50mg a day with Topical regimes - Ivermectin, Clindamycin & Erythromycin wipes & KALME Cleanser
Dr Lanham said the rarely see flares with Doxycycline especially ay low doses and in fact it has anti inflammortory effects as my pain is immediatly less. He did say Minocycline will induce a flare, I assume as that crosses the Blood Brain barrier
