I have been taking 5 my folic acid a day months prior to my last cycle. I am now pregnant (still early days) and continue taking 5 mg in addition to multi vitamins.
NHS do not advise 5 mg unless you know of specific risks / predispositions. I also read that there were some inconclusive studies suggesting some negative effects.
I previously was under an impression that your body absorbs only what it needs, perhaps I am wrong. Could you please provide your thoughts and if I should reduce the dosage to a regular dose.
Thank you xx

Hope you get some replies to your post As you say your body will only absorb what it needs Take it there was no real reason for you to take the larger dose Check with GP/Midwife if you should reduce your dosage to 400 micrograms
So I’m on 5mg of folic for the duration of my pregnancy, on medical advice.
In terms of supplements my midwife thought I may be taking too many of sone. She says it was nothing to worry about, if my body didn’t need them it would simply pee them out.
Hi I am on 5mg folic acid during my recent ivf and for the duration of this pregnancy, I was also taking pregnacare vitamins but I asked the pharmacist about this and they advised that I only take the 5mg folic acid and not both as that would have been too much folic acid, my midwife advised only taking this and vitamin D alongside as they are the main two vitamins needed during pregnancy.
