Hi Utep
There are consequences for all diets and those that lean heavily on one biochemical pathway do merit concern. There is a lot of debate about KETO, from my perspective as a liver patient I don't think forcing the liver to make so many ketones is a good idea. It is also good to keep in mind that the colon thrives on butyrates which are produced by the digestion of fiber by gut bacteria. Too much protein also makes a workload for the liver so for reasons like that I don't go there.

I’m confused I am on a keto diet and I’m vegetarian. My protein intake is kept in check. I guess everyone needs to keep protein at an acceptable g per day . The Awful Toad on the lchf community has a lot of information posted about all of this.
Hi Ginny
The liver is so complex that you can force all kinds of responses depending on what you feed it. You can lose weight with almost any kind of diet. If you have liver disease we believe you should ask your liver to do as little work as possible. If you think that is a good idea then KETO is not ideal. Those ketones that you are forcing to be produced are mostly made by the mitochondria of the liver so you are asking a sick organ to work overtime to keep your brain running. There is no perfect answer because the chemistry of the body is so complex that there are always consequences whenever you push your diet to an extreme. As you think about what you need to do not to be ill our view is to be kind to your liver.
