I am a diabetic for the last 10 years and was controlling it with diet and metformin. I switched to LCHF a month ago. My PPBS is still normal, but my FBS keeps shooting up. Two weeks before, it was 140, last week 156 and this week 171. Is there any particular reason? Interesting thing is that the PPBS has always been under 140..
Your eating habits are correct, So long your PPS is same and/or lower than Fasting BSL its fine. Like bank A/c when your Fasting is same or low your diet is fine and fornegative a/c your cals are from FD.-Stock HbA1C is likely to come down in two weeks time. You may walk a little bit more in addition for 20 mts to ensure speedy recovery.
Wish you good luck . Check after 10 days and keep watching. your fasting will come down and ensure PPS does not spike.
In my case, I have found four 15/20g carb snacks a day (one between each of the daytime meals and two between dinner and breakfast) may have helped in keeping a low blood glucose average.
Our medfree has changed hie Profile and watching silently and give him feed back. He is an expert to correct every one W R To LCHF. See your result after a month and dont prik your self too much at odd hours too. Your body metabolism is likely to change favourably in a month and dont leave medicine. best wishes

Testing at 2 or 3 or 4 am, results in awareness, as to what is exactly happening, with one's own body.
I have personally seen Doctors continuosly increasing the night dosage of Diabetes medicines, month after month, to take care of High FBS (Morning High Sugars). These patients, after pricking themselves at the so-called odd hours, realized, that in their case, it was the high dosage, leading to low sugars in the middle of night, in turn leading to the body reacting with dumping glucose in to the blood, to take care of the low sugar. Some of them even used to snack in the middle of night, mistaking low sugar, for sever hunger. A reduction in medicine ( in some cases to the extent of 75% ) for these people, lead to controlled FBS.
In @csaju's case, he will be able to confirm, whether that is the case or his sugar levels are really shooting up, after dinner & take the appropriate action along with LC Diet.
Would request, thinking & enquiring, before negating anyone's suggestion.

Dear csahu, there is no worry .Your HbA1c results are really good. One thing I have not understood is the level of your ppbs. You are repeatedly stating it is normal. But what is the reading?Please furnish the details.
Secondly the testing of Fasting sugar level.: One has to give a gap of 12 hours after the dinner. Then take the reading please follow this and give the results.Have patience. Maintain a log of medicine, type of food taken, and reading of BS.This will help to analyse and take a suitable corrective action.
As far LCHF you are more or less on correct path. Try to add some fat content.like butter, or Cocoonut oil
PPBS has always been under 140 after 90 mins (1 1/2 hours after breakfast) for the last one year..
I usually have my dinner around 7.30 pm and will go to sleep at 10 pm. I checks my FBS at 6 AM usually..
Finally, I dont like butter and cheese. I use coconut oil in making my dinner with greengram.. I dont like drinking it nor mixing it with tea/coffee as medfree suggested..
I thought of chips made with unripe banana fried in coco oil, then I heard even unripe banana is rich in carbs.. Am I right?
dear csaju, You better check at 7.30 or12 hrs after the dinner. If the the results are not improved consult a diabetician for taking one tablet of metformin of 250 or 500 mg before half an hour of dinner and see the results thereafter. But constant checking is necessary. weekly once is not sufficient
As for the food is concerned medfree has a point there to consume coconut oil in the morning.You consume the way you like it . I consume in different way. I do not consume milk but consume curd and buttermilk.
Dear saju, please check the results daily at least for three to four days to establish the average results. Secondly you have to device a way to consume the coco oil yourself; method may be different but quantity should be three teaspoonful at least

For a diabetic of 10 years' duration, your A1C @ 6.3 is really good. Congratulations. Your fasting sugar levels alone seems a cause for concern. Do not expect miracle cure by switching over to LCHF diet in days. Persevere for 3 to six months, and regularly test every month your FBS and PPBS.
Butter milk is good. In our family, all of us consume it liberally, especially during summer, but I do not however understand if drinking 1 litre of butter milk for lunch is part of the regimen under LCHF is good or adequate from the eneergy needs of the body..

I haven;t eater a proper meal in years.. Even before switching to LCHF, all I had was 3 chappathis altogether as breakfast and dinner and a handful of brown rice as lunch.. Now in LCHF, I haven't eaten rice and wheat in last one month or so..
Poultry is the only meat I like and that too I eat only for 4-5 days in a month..
1. My limited information is that a blood test is named FBS if the blood sample is drawn after eight (8) hours of completion of a food intake, but before the lapse of fourteen (14) hours; I may be wrong. Please take the opinion of experts here or elsewhere.

3. As your HbA1c is above 6 two months ago, the rosy things seen are only the temporary effect of the diabetic medicines taken. Early morning you may not be under the safeguard of the drug & hence the disease shows up its identity. PPBS is normal because of the diet.

2. Once in 6 months or so, I test my FBS and 90 mins PPBS after breakfast, lunch and dinner and I always get the highest reading after breakfast, so every week I test only PPBS after breakfast.
One query though, different opinion about the timing and reading of PPBS. Some say it should be checked after 90 mins, some 110 mins and some other 120 mins and all of them say it should be under 140.. What is the correct timing?
3. Ya.. I also think so.. But when I stopped the medicine for one week, the PPBS also started going up.. So I started medicine again. ONLY 250 g metformin in night before supper..
You asked when to test the PPBS; after 90, 110 or 120 minutes of a meal?
I feel, it depends on the purpose & state of mind of patient &/or doctor.
1. If it is to cover up the diet/medication violations & to console oneself or convince the doctor that the patient is following the instructions meticulously and results are fine, test PPBS as late as possible - say after 150 minutes (two & a half hours) or so of completion of food intake.
2. If it is to find out how the Pancreas is working & what is the nearly steady state value, test PPBS at exactly 120 minutes (two hours) of completion of food intake.
3. If it is to find out the peak value of blood sugar following a meal, test PPBS around 90 minutes (one & a half hours) of completion of food intake.
Even though blood sugar escalation with food intake and Glucose intake for OGTT are different, following it in the latter case gives a repeatable, comparable & standardised pattern. Test after 120 minutes or at 120 minutes will miss higher values.
Wikipedia on Postprandial_glucose_test ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postp... ) says: "For a 2-hour postprandial test, a meal is eaten exactly 2 hours before the blood sample is taken." It is EATEN.
Your observation may be related to the "dawn Phenomenon" wherein the liver pumps sugar in the blood stream (converted from the stored Glycogen) in the hours between 4 & 6 AM to prepare the body with the source of energy it needs for the expected daily activity. There is a class of medication developed to prevent this processs from taking place. Merck's Jenuvia, or Janumet (Jenuvia combined with Metformin) or among those drugs. They have their own side effects of reported impacts on the Thyroid glands, as well as the pancreas. Anyone interested in pursuing the subject can Google it.

All the 3 labs that I have tested with in Bombay have collected blood samples 2 hours after finishing eating. Not 2 hours after "first bite".
Dr. Bernstein and all other "experts" I have read on the subject have also suggested 2 hours after finishing eating.
As far as I am concerned, I have tested 60 mins, 90 mins, 105 mins and 120 mins after finishing eating. By and large, I am normal, not even pre-diabetic for this test.
As far as fooling myself is concerned, I am far too practical for that. But, you are welcome to your views
My experience with the 3 labs in Bombay is as follows :-
They ask you when you are going to finish your meal & then inform you that they will come and take the blood sample 2 hours later. In every case, with me, this IS exactly what happened. I have tested approx 4/5 times a year for the last 5 years ie at least 20/25 times.
Read the book properly. You will find it. I am not going to spoon feed you.
