Does anybody have any experience of supplementing with L-Theanine, (or drinking Green Tea, which contains L-Theanine) to help with sleep or any symptoms of Parkinsons?
This video piqued by interest as it indicates that L-Theanine reduces the excitatory signals of Glutamate in the brain. youtube.com/watch?v=IhTPrqY... . This video suggests taking 200mg of L-Theanine 45 minutes before sleep.
A quick google search led me to this quote from Science Direct "Increased level of extracellular glutamate is a phenomenon associated with Parkinson's disease pathophysiology. L-theanine bears the potential to attenuate neuronal excitotoxicity due to glutamatergic upsurge. L-theanine may be an effective medication against long-term L-DOPA induced dyskinesia."
It comes from a paper "Neuroprotective attributes of L-theanine, a bioactive amino acid of tea, and its potential role in Parkinson's disease therapeutics"

My pwp takes 200 mg l-theanine every night. Although he has never had many sleep issues, I think the l-theanine reduces the number of times he wakes in the night. It does not seem to have any negative effects. I do not have PD but I do have insomnia and I find l-theanine to be relaxing.
My hwp takes 200 mg L-Theanine to help with sleep. It's hard to know how much this helps however because he also takes 500 mg of GABA, Melatonin and Magnesium at night. When I was searching for supplements that might help with sleep, I found this informative. health.clevelandclinic.org/...
I have used l theanine and have used it in conjunction with melatonin. I feel the theanine is mildly additive to melatonin for sleep and helps to prevent waking as often. There are sleep supplements that combine these two. It has a multitude of health effects and by no surprise, has synergy with EGCG in some health issues as both are derived from tea.
I take green tea extract caps with my mucuna as per Dr Michley's doc that I have seen a few times. Didn't know it helps with sleep. Will take note now.
