Haloperidol

Hi all, posted on here for the first time a few days ago regarding my mums HE. She’s just started on Haloperidol today, and just wondering on your experiences? She’s definitely calmer after one but a long way to go. Eating is a massive challenge psychologically, she’s said she doesn’t want to live but doesn’t want to die either. It’s so hard for everyone involved. Any hand holding from you guys is welcomed!

Take care xxx

Referring back to your last thread where you said consultant had advised against Rifaximin. Have they explained why because Rifaximin in conjunction with Lactulose is standard treatment for HE. Haloperidol is an anti-psychotic drug and won't work in the same way as Rifaximin in actually dealing with the toxin build up.

I can’t remember the reason why but she is on a slightly different drug that does the same as well as a similar thing to lactulose... she was on those but didn’t get on with it. The drugs she is on is definitely treating the cause as well as the symptoms. We have managed 2 poos today.... crazy what you can get excited about really! So those are starting to work. Was wondering if people had experience of the anti psychotic drugs getting more effective once taken regularly, we do have the specialist from the hospice calling in again Thursday so obviously we’ll be asking him the same questions but when you’re on the front line it’s difficult to wait for those answers isn’t it?! Crazy, difficult and heartbreaking times xxx

Hello,

There is certainly a lot going on with your Mum. It is unusual for haloperidol to be used in this situation but there may be a very good reason for this. We do have a free Helpline on 0800 652 7330. If you feel it would be helpful to talk to one of our liver specialist nurses then please do give us a call Mon - Fri 10:00 - 15:00
