Hi 9iron

Is leg cramping a side effect of Atorvastatin? My mum’s leg cramping has increased quite considerably. She has been taking Atorvastatin for about 4-5 months now. I wonder if this is the cause. I will be following this post with the hope that someone responds to you and perhaps, can also share any other advice around the medication 🤞🏽

All the best.

Speak to your GP about trying another statin to see if it makes any difference. There are several to choose from. But if statins are not for you due to serious side effects there are other medications available to manage your cholesterol.

My GP reduced my atorvastatin from 40 to 20 after I reported painful cramps. I also drink supermarket tonic water daily which seems to have removed the problem as it contains a small amount of quinine. One full glass daily seems to work, otherwise I try to avoid carbonated drinks.

After Three and a half years, I have tried all the statins and ezemitibe, and they all kindly have created the typical side effects of muscle ache and leg cramp. Even referred to lipids department and prescribed Vazkepa. Suffered from cramp with these. The worst cramp I have ever had, in my quad, where I have only ever suffered from once before.

Not on any type of statin at the moment. Waiting for GP to think of something else to try.

Have you tried Inclisiran yet. I would be interested to know how you have coped with it. I have spoken to one of the gp's at my surgery about it. But haven't been able to talk to him again since, and I then was diverted by a different gp to Vazkepa.

HiI take atorvastatin and also have the major side affects. I asked my cardiologist why don't they subscribe with the statin Ubiquinol Coq 10 300mg or higher as I done some research on Coq 10 and it's a supplement that helps with joint pain heart health etc. She said no although she recommended that I take it as it should he'll with the side affects from atorvastatin!

I found out it costs about £1.00 per pill that's the main reason they don't also precribe it with atorvastatin both cardiologist and my gp! So I went and researched Ubiquinol coq 10 300mg and recently started taking it again. It usually takes 4+ weeks for supplements kick in. I have all the bad side affects of atorvastatin also on B.P meds ramipril and Indapamide, so bad couldn't sleep sometimes. I hope this helps and if you can try and afford it give it a go might help. I did ask my cardiologist why don't they prescribe this or put it in the statin?! Obvious answer was cost too much and it's a supplement not a prescription drug!!! I had to find this out on my own, I stopped taking it for a while but just start taking Ubiquinol Coq 10 300mg it again, waiting for it to kick in. Hope this information helps just sharing what I've learnt and all the best with everything!!

I suffer from the same, intolerable leg cramps, have ceased statins until the side effects cease, and will start a different statin…

Have your leg cramps stopped yet please?

sadly the cramps continue, I have since had an online consultation and stoped the statins until I have new blood test 30.0623.

The advice from the doctors is to stop the statins and wait for the effects to leave your system, and then try an alternative statin

Hope this helps
